In theory that's a good idea. I'm all for private enterprise and individualism over government mandates. There's just one problem... in all my years of working with the public, I've discovered one hard, unfortunate truth... 80% of the general population are bumbling, idiotic morons and of the remaining 20%, most of them make a living keeping the 80% from drowning in their own drool. Now, the 20% I'm not worried about. I'd like to be able to take what I have already saved up in social security and put it in an IRA or 401k or something and most people would do that. However, what happens with the other 80% who choose to opt out of social security just so they can have a little extra money in their paychecks to buy an extra case of Pabst Blue Ribbon or the latest X-Box game? What happens to them when they're too old to work, and how will it affect the 20% non-idiots?

Choices have consequences. They must live with their own choices.

Choices have consequences. They must live with their own choices. Ideally, yes. But we would be forced to take care of them, for their own foolish choices.

The stipulation should be that THEY will take care of THEMSELVES upon opting out of SS. Safety nets were made to be missed, occasionally.

Didn't families take care of their elderly before SS and nursing homes became the norm?
Some of us still do that...

Is that to me? I have no clue why, it seems like we get stuck caring for all the people that make poor choices now, what would be different in the future?

Gus babbles on for the right. But him and millions still sleep. Those who sleep have NOT yet figured out there is a ruling class which controls our money and laughs at us little peons. When will the little Guses of the world figure this out? The left may some time figure this out as well. BOTH sides of the political equation are tools. They both prop each other up for the destruction of America. Are you that dense?

Safety nets were also made to be the last line of defense, not the first.
