Want to know why I love living here? You've seen some of the reasons in past photos. Here's another one. These were caught while we were fishing in a snow storm in about 25 degree weather. Went out at high tide, which is usually best, and didn't catch anything except for one shark for 6 hours. Then, at low tide (usually the worst time), we started catching fish like crazy! Mostly skates and few sharks, but we caught a few halibut that we threw back (only about 20 pounders; too small), but caught our limit of 2 each of 50 pounders. www.hopeofglory.net/me with fish.jpg[/img] We have an audience while cleaning them. John is great at cutting up halibut. Because of the way they grow, while I'm good at filleting salmon, trout, etc., I don't do as well on halibut www.hopeofglory.net/me cutting fish.jpg[/img]

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!
I'll be heading to the lake in the AM to see if I can catch me some bass. Hopefully no snowstorm but it will be chilly in the AM.

The bait we use is literally bigger than a lot of keepers in TN. We had some herring over a foot long weighing over a pound. John caught one of those halibut on a cod that he caught on a herring.

I know we don't have the biggest species of fish in TN but they sure are fun to catch! Our trout are like minnows compared to those in AK. But I do not think Alaska has bass, do they?

Wrong direction.
And I love to catch trout in TN!
We have northern pike, but they're transplanted and killing everything else in the lakes and rivers. Kind of like halfbacks are killing TN.

A true fisherman if there ever was one. Goes out in a 25 degree snowstorm just for the halibut.

Yeah, and I wasn't trying to catch anything, though I wish I could have caught the otter on camera.

To Fun! Hope you like to eat fish. I don't think I've eaten 100 pounds of fish accumulated in my entire life.

That puts about 150 pounds of halibut in the freezer.
I've checked into the skate recipes, and from what I hear, the skate here don't taste good. If someone had some, I'd be willing to try it, but I'm not willing to butcher a 50 pound skate just to throw it away.
However, if the shark is good, I'll start keeping it. It's easy to butcher. But a 25 pound shark only yields 3-4 pounds of meat. You cut the tail off just behind their body cavity, then slice the rest of the tail into round slices. The rest of the fish is too difficult to butcher because they excrete urine through their skin and you have to be very, very careful and there's hardly any meat there.

Dirty Jobs taught me that Sharks are almost all liver. I have a funny feeling that no one eats shark liver.

Well, if you start slicing right behind the body cavity, no liver!
