Several of us are trying to get back to or start healthier eating habits. What are some of the substitutions you've used to replace an unhealthy choice with a healthier alternative?
Example, my favorite treat replacement:
Instead of ice cream which is incredibly full of useless fat and calories, I make fresh fruit smoothies. I use Silk light soy milk, a fresh banana and a frozen fruit. Right now I have some strawberries I got at the Chattanooga market on Sunday that I topped, put in a freezer bag and froze. It tastes great, satisfies my desire for a creamy tasting, cold dessert without the extra sugar and fat. If I were being REALLY good I'd use just fresh fruit and ice, but I'm not back down to that level yet.
So, hit me with YOUR idea for a healthy choice!

As I am actively working to lose almost 50 lbs, instead of the regular yogurts (lite and otherwise), I've started eating plain Greek yogurt and adding fresh or frozen berries to it. Less calories than the other yogurts that have fruit added to them and a whole lot more protein.
Already dropped 15, so I'm almost a third of the way to my goal!!

I've been eating a lot less bread, but you don't have much of a problem with that. More exercise, more fresh veggies, more grilling, less sauces, and I'm down about 15 lbs, but I've hit a wall at 300 lbs. Need to find a way to drop 50 more, so I'll be interested in everyone's comments as well.

I've started eating a lot more and varied salads. I try to avoid iceberg lettuce and look for the greener greens to replace it. Fruit smoothies have also been increased. I try to find a way to earn the more decadent food choices by not allowing myself to have ice cream or cake unless I've ridden my bike some amount of miles at some average speed.

www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/I've found using the MyDailyPlate feature at LiveStrong.com has helped tremendously. I'm able to track what I eat and it also allows me to track my workouts. Then it calculates my net calories for the day and that lets me know if I've earned to right to something a little extra. Also eating more salads, but leaving off things like cheese, unless I'm at home where I know the cheese is the reduced fat kind. I've also gone out to a lot of the restaurant websites and downloaded their menus and nutritional items and check those for healthy choices before I go out to eat. Panera's nutritional portion of their website is excellent as it will let you customize your items. For instance, I love their Fuji Apple Chicken Salad, but if I get it as is normally prepared, it is over 500 calories, which is almost 1/2 of my daily intake, and that's before including the whole grain bagette. By leaving off the cheese, candied pecans and onions, I cut that down to 370 calories, with the balsamic vinaigrette.

I gave up Carbohydrates for the most part and I have lost 20 pounds over the last 5 months. I also started drinking Natural Light over heavier beers except on the weekends and then I have whatever I want beer wise. The odd thing about dropping carbs is that I have had chronic indigestion for the last 15 years and it has completely gone away. I also find myself with paradoxically more energy than less. My wife put us both on this diet. It is a paleo diet. If you are interested google it. It is basically trying to eat the same things cave men ate.
Good luck.

You mean you dropped complex carbs but kept high carb fruits and veggies, right? Just no grains?
Cuz, NO carbs means going into ketosis, and that isn't healthy at all. On the other hand, that sounds like some of the symptoms I have with Celiacs.

no grains and for the most part no potatoes. Lots of lean meat, vegetables, raw vegetables and nuts. Also we don't eat many beans.

I was getting close to that a year ago, though I did still have some rice. Then again, I lived real close to this awesome market with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies that our local stores just don't provide at anywhere near the low price I was getting.

I do that to my strawberries, too. Pry one out of the frozen bag and pop it in my mouth. I like Greek yogurt as well. I seems to have an extra kick.

I started smoking Malboro Lights and I really have been feeling better.
My next goal is starting to drink diet (Lite) beer and cutting back to 10 hours of work each day.
I do that and I should live forever!

I will gladly eat rabbit food all day long, have only lean protien and foreswear potatos, rice, white bread, etc. Do not ever expect me to drink light/lite beer under any circumstances, ever. Ever.

Yep. That is probably why I won't follow through on the diet beer thing. There really should be a limit on living forever. It's not all it's cracked up to be, after all.

My goal isn't to be able to live forever but to enjoy it the best I can and be as self sufficient and mobile for as long as I can. I don't want to be forever sick on a rascal waiting to die.
