Anybody have a good metal detector they would consider renting to me for a week? I'm going to a fairly secluded island on Florida's gulf coast and would like to do a little treasure hunting while I'm there.
I have a plan B, but would prefer to just rent one from somebody. Need a pretty good one though.

I'm not sure, but I think these guys might have rentals...

If not, they can surely get you in touch with someone who has one that might rent it.

BF,
I have one that you can borrow. Not sure if it's a good one or not. All I've ever found with it is pop tops. LOL

Yea, I bought one from them about 20 years ago. Then I returned it to them and sold it at half price a couple of years later. Wish I'd kept it. I went by there today, but it turns out they are only open 1 day a month during the summer. The second Thursday of every month. That's what it said on the door. Sportsman's Warehouse had a couple of cheap ones, but besides that I can't find any. This idea of treasure hunting just came to me in the last few days or I would have bought one off Ebay. I'll get the cheap one from Sportsman's if I have to. Then return it, of course.

Hope you find "booty".

I think mostly they do online sales nowadays. Both my mom and my dad have worked there in the past, but it has been several years.

I hear there is good money in the oil business. Just collect the black stuff on the beach and call yourself "Blackfox Petroleum"

I called him today and I'm going by there tommorrow or Friday and get one from him. He sells the same one that Sportsman's carries, but he is $50 cheaper. I'll also look at some others.

Treasure Quest Metal Detector 5532 Battlefield Pkwy Ringgold, GA 30736 Tel: 706-937-9089 Note: estimated location Alright, that's a cool place. He has got a bunch of Civil War stuff in there, from swords, buckles, bullets, canteens, guns, and even an unexploded cannon ball(with the explosive drilled out of course). He's in the process of moving to downtown Ringgold, where he will be from now on after this week. I purchased the Teknetics Delta 4000, which is a lower end machine, but he told me it performs very well, and the main thing for me is that the coil is submersible. Low tide is around 8pm every night down there, so I plan to get a few feet out into an area that not everyone can scan. If I find some treasure, I'll post some pics on here.

I might have to borrow it sometime? No problemo. It's pretty cool. I went out for a few minutes last night to the creek behind the house and found a nail. After that, I figured out how to make it disregard Iron.

Ya know something, there is obviously an incredible amount of beer can tabs out there in the world.
I found a lot of those. I found a tent stake, and I found a pretty old fishing net lead weight. I did however find a lot of really cool shells while detecting on the beach. Not with the detector of course, but just watching what the coil was passing over. Turns out North Captiva Island is pretty well known for it's shelling.
I didn't do nearly as much detecting as I originally planned. It was hotter than a slave ship down there, and lugging around that detector AND a cooler full of beer was pretty taxing. If we go back next year, it will definitely be in a cooler month.
Nice place though. I'll post a few pics whenever the wife gets them all internetty.
