Last Ford Crown Victoria rolls off the line By Peter Valdes-Dapena September 15, 2011 NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off a Canadian assembly line Thursday, marking the end of the big, heavy Ford cars that have been popular with taxi fleets and police departments for decades. Since 1979, almost 10 million Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars -- so-called Panther Platform vehicles -- have been sold. Demand for better fuel economy and performance has choked off sales over the years. The Crown Victoria and Town Car get just 24 miles per gallon on the highway, a figure matched by some large three-row SUVs today. The automaker has started producing the specially designed Taurus Police Interceptor to replace the Crown Victoria that had been America's most popular police car. Seeing an opportunity, Chrysler Group and General Motors are also aggressively marketing their own police car options. Read more: cnn.com

Departments are looking to save money. Unfortunately, they are not looking at anything else. Smaller vehicles do not allow for the necessary equipment to be carried in the smaller spaces. There is not enough room for a protective barrier/cage necessary for prisoner transport in the smaller cars. And anyone over 5'8" will NOT be comfortable in the smaller vehicles, cage or no. Stuff 'em and cuff 'em is going to entail a whole lot more "stuffing" in the near future.

They'll regret it, too.

I see an Old Coke/New Coke scheme in the works. But unlike Coke it will take more than six months to work out. They will be redesigning the car. If the world don't end next year place your bets, a new "Vickie" will be rolling out about 2014.
BTW what is the lifetime of a Police interceptor "Vickie"?

There's plenty of leg room on the roof.

"BTW what is the lifetime of a Police interceptor "Vickie"?"
5-7 years, depending on mileage, use and abuse.

LR.... just when the last are about to die FORD will "Hear the cries of LE" and reintroduce The Vic, as Byran said, much ballywho and fanfare.....
Besides..... Ford has been the preferred vehicle since LE gave up the horses. They ain't gonna loose that tradition. Not with out a fight anyways.
