I made some from scratch last night. Now that I know what's in them, I don't love them like I did... *sigh*
ingredients: beans, onion, bacon grease.

or lard instead of bacon fat, maybe a little minced garlic. If using black beans, add a healthy pinch, well really 1/2t, of epazote.

You can buy fat-free refried beans in a can.

Why on earth would you eat that stuff in the first place unless you're out at a mexican restaurant and can only GET that or some really badly re-heated rice?

I like beans? [shrug] my refried beans, some cheese, a bit of (home made) salsa spread on a corn tortilla baked in the toaster oven for about 5 min on 450º works for lunch.

I use it in my taco layered dip. With shredded cheese and low fat sour cream and lettuce and onion and salsa.

There's beans. There's refried beans. Am I missing something?

Refried beans have a smoother texture, making them better for spreads or dip. They also have spices in them. They kinda look like a can of dog food when opened.

The lard is essential, and an accurate translation is "well cooked beans".

I guess it's the grease that's turning you off? Yeah, I'm trying to drop a few pounds and love re-fried beans. Now I know why...

Careful, though...refried beans tend to give the resulting flatulence a little too much "moisture".

Think that has more to do with the tequila than with the frijoles.

Has more to do with sphincters then frijoles.

Looking around on google, it looks like the bacon grease is the difference between American "Mexican" and authentic Mexican. Which makes since.... There's not a lot of cured meats (or good parts from pigs) down yonder.

Lard is the standard fat used.

Not a big fan; never have been. Too much like someone had already eaten them. To each his own.
