I've got 3 of his autographs from Engel Stadium when I was 12 when the Greenville Braves visited the Looks. been following him literally my entire nearly adult life. My favorite player ever. If this ends up being the decision,.. I think it's the correct one. For his Hall-of-Fame standards he can't keep up. Cooperstown 2015: Smoltz, Cox, Chipper. All go in together. Go Braves. nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/37713132/ns/sports-baseball/

and what makes this so surreal?
the day this talk starts he hits a double, solo Home Run, and scored 2 runs.
man he's awesome.

With the way he's been hitting the last season-and-a-half, I'm thinking maybe he needs to retire at the All-Star break.

Considering his injuries over that time period, Gary, I tend to disagree, as he can still hit when he's capable of playing. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case of late. He'll do the right thing and retire after this season.

That's kind of my point, Thorne - because of his injuries, he is no longer consistently productive and doesn't show any sign that things are going to get much - if any - better over the rest of the year.
He is hitting just .228 with three homers and 22 RBIs this season.
But a real consideration is how much production has come from third base when other players have started there instead of Chipper.
Omar Infante (.314, one homer, 16 RBIs) and Brooks Conrad (.280, three homers, 12 RBIs) are both hitting better even in their limited time at the position, so maybe this is the time to let the younger, stronger and healthier guys take over and help the Braves win another title.

the irony?
going into this 5 - 1 homestand, when all the retirement talk began, Chipper went on to hit .500 with a handful of RBIs and a HR over the 6 games.
he's now hitting .250. which all things considered is solid.
this is the best the Braves have played in 5 - 8 years
