I think it is a good decision - go out while on top, after such a good season. It would suck if he played again and had a horrible season. It would be different if he retired after a season like this past one if he did not have 17 years in the league.

so.. bretts coming back home to DA KILL... or his 500 acre palace in hattiesburg....either way he sure gave the locals here much to be proud of....i suppose all them wisconsin folks who make their summer pilgrimage here to hang out at the BROKE SPOKE and sign the names to the wall of DOLLY's convenience store will fall off..... in a town of 2,000 still weak from Katrina you can say " there goes the tourist dollar"..... sigh

First ballot Hall of Famer, one of the ten best quarterbacks of all time, with records that will stand for decades, if not longer... and played the game with a joy and passion that far too many modern players are lacking.

All around great QB, even if he was a steenkin' Packer. I wonder if either Manning will have that kind of longevity. Wouldn't surprise me if Peyton lasts as long. Will be interesting to compare the two ten years from now.

Brett said yesterday that he'd be willing to come back to the Packers if they were "devestated" by injuries. In other words, I don't think it's likely we're going to see him on the field again, at least professionally.

I disagree.Favre's tired of the training season....he'll be in uniform before the pre-season.It only took him a couple weeks to open the door back up,with the "injury" contingency. The passion dies at the end of a season, plus the fact he desparately wanted Randy Moss, and then reality sets in and you start hearing about his agent talking, and "under the right conditions" statements. As a matter of fact,as Joe Namath said "I guarantee it".

nope,un uh,no way, he's done. He is smart enough to walk away while he can still walk and not hobble off. IMO Peyton Manning is that smart too.

He could go for George Blanda's age record if he's careful with his playing time and strategic with his heroics.

I retired last year, 8 minutes later I wanted to unretire and work for someone else, but I would not let me out of my contract, so I ended up unretiring and letting my replacement work full time while I just cashed and sat in a chair and ate munchies.

seriously,... very good work keeping this awesome thread alive.
like Favre's career I hope this thread will never end.
this annual story is very similiar to the following annuals:
-who's gonna have the crazy zaniest funniest super bowl commerical -who's the next star to snub the Pro Bowl -who's going #1 in the NFL draft months out -who in baseball has taken steriods recently -when will the NBA playoffs finally end -who's #1 & #2 in the BCS -when's college football gonna get a playoff system -who dare says the SEC isn't the superior Football conference -who's the cinderalla of the "Big Dance" -How long into the season until Chipper's on the DL -when do the Braves fade down the stretch run -when do the Yanks/Red Sox play again -who's gonna coach the Raiders -who's better, Kobe or Lebron -who's gonna play in the FCS Nat'l Championship game (& this year, where)
and will Brett Favre retire?
I love it all,... well,... save the Super Bowl Ad conversation.
