I know I can keep a handgun at home with no problem but when I am in my motor home away from home can I keep one there since it is at least temporarily my home ? What about a shotgun broken down in 3 pieces ?

If you are going to Canada, it will be confiscated if found at the border, CCWP or not.

That's not true. I've carried guns across Canada legally several times. Certain guns are banned, some have limited access, and all require forms and a permit.

I have known people who were searched at the border and had their firearms confiscated, however, they most likely ignored the required paperwork. Thanks for the correction, I learned something today, so it's not a bad day!

1- get a permit
2- check the laws where you will be going
3- call ahead and check the laws if you are unsure.
4- it is YOUR responsibility to know the law about where you can and cannot carry. this is the most important, you need to know the laws for where you may be traveling. anybody can tell you what the laws are, but you need to know them. & I suggest you actually print the relevant laws out and keep them in your vehicle.
if you don't have a lawyer, get one, just in case....if your like me and cannot afford to have one on retainer, please please consider some sort of firearms/CCW insurance program. Its basically pre-paid legal service for the armed citizen.
as for the shotgun. if it breaks down legally. like some quality over/under skeet guns. it should be no problem. as long as it is legal, again, you have to check federal (BATFE) and state laws.
if you will be traveling into Canada, check with them, again the whole federal and state level laws. if you do some digging on line you should be able to find all the info you need, and if you cant find in print, you should be able to find a phone number for the public safety department or the equivalent agency.
good luck, know the law, and protect yourself & your loved ones by exercising your 2nd amendment rights.

Also, cross at Montana. They're a bunch of rednecks there who hate their own government.
Interestingly, I couldn't take my Ruger 10-22 with me, which could theoretically bounce off the windshield of a car, but I could take my 8mm Mauser.

seriously though, in most states (check the law for exact wording) your motor home is your domain, therefore it is your home. there was a truck driver that shot someone who broke in to his truck a couple of weeks ago. it was near either nashville or knoxville, the guy threw a rock thru the driver window. the driver was sleeping in the back. the guy shattered the window then left. he returned a few minutes later, tried to get inside the truck and was shot and i believe he got killed. there were no charges filed as the truck was the drivers "domain". all his personal effects were there, clothes, food, etc. so by TN law it was deemed his domain and it was a home invasion.
that might not be the case everywhere, just check the laws. in the states, you can get away with interstate travel, meaning you can break it down to carry it through the state, but the question that pops up is what do you do if you have to use the weapon and it is in 3 or 4 pieces. it is a tough call. there is the legal answer then there is the obvious answer. WWYD?

Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

"print the relevant laws out and keep them in your vehicle."
Excellent advice Goomba! I keep an updated copy of the laws in my car for the states I travel to most frequently, Sc, Ga and Al.

Thanks for the responses. I keep seeing more and more wierdos on the road these days. A couple of years ago in Florida some nut pulled up behind my motor home at a Walmart and started raising hell with everybody that passed by. I think he was in a state of chemicaly indused stupidity. A cop tried to reach into the vehicle when he wouldn't get out and got kicked in the face for his trouble then all hell broke loose. They had to taze his butt 3 times and then gang tackle him with about 8 cops to contain him. I think he was lucky they didn't just blow him away and be done with it.

Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6. QFT. I also like this.."I would rather be caught with one, than caught without one".

that is what Suzanna Hupp told members of the Texas government in so many words. the exact phrasing eludes me right now, but she said if she had to do it all over again, she wold gladly take the felony charge versus having her parents brutally shot to death in Lubbock Texas. i am sure you all have heard about that. it happened in the early 90's. in case you missed it, here is the youtube link. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1u0Byq5Qis
