I get asked this on a regular basis. It is a difficult question to answer, sometimes... I'm not always as eloquent with the written word as I would like. but I think that if you carry, or are considering getting your permit, you should read this. "Why do you carry a gun?”by John Connor If I had a nickel for every time I’ve been asked that question, I’d have, uh … as many guns as his firearm-festooned Editorial Immenseness, Roy-Boy. It’s been asked of me by all flavors of folks in all slices of society, with attitudes and expressions ranging from angry-arrogant to curtly-contemptuous, to brainless an’ befuddled. My answers to it have sorta formed three phases in my professional gun-carrying life. During that first and longest phase, I answered all of ’em sincerely and articulately, often following up with stacks of historic and legal documents. After many years, I concluded only a semi-significant sliver of people even heard what I was sayin’. The rest had already made up their muddled minds. Finally, I just got sick of it, and moved on to Phase 2. If those asking seemed to have teensy open spaces in their minds, I gave ’em S & A: “Sincere & Articulate.” The more harshly-bleating sheep, however, often got exchanges like this: www.americanhandgunner.com/GunCrank2.html

Why I carry.
Because dragging it behind me tends to scratch it up.

I have run in to the same issue as goomba. I have even had people tell me that if I was the "victim" of a gun crime I would not look at it the same. Well I have I have had a pistol stuck to my head by a young punk in downtown Chattanooga. It was because of this I decided to get my carry License. Now I keep better situational awareness and am more prepared if that happens again. I hope that I NEVER have to use it but if I need to I will have it. If someone like me or goomba had been around when Ofc Jullie Jacks had been attacked more then likely she would still be alive and the asshole that killed her would be worm food. All in all I carry because I can. [edited b/c osrb misspelled my name ]

because i have the permit and because i can. in a nutshell, i was almost robbed years ago when i was an assistant manager for krystal. the guy pulls up after we had closed (sig mtn store about 5 years ago) when it was the little drive thru only. he was informed we were closed, i had a ton of money out of the safe counting it for my bank and deposit, and he starts pounding my drive thru window with his fist. he shattered it, damn near broke it out of the frame. it was a double paned window and his fist looked rough.
anyway, i called 911 as it was happening and it took the police probably 10 minutes to get there on a friday night. i decided right then that i was not going to be put in that situation defenseless ever again.
had i been armed and he got in the building, things would have been real ugly for someone that night. it would have cost me my job, but like i have seen it posted over and over, it is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
combine that with disgruntled employees who got fired, their spouses calling up at the store threatening to cut me when i walk out at night, and making bank deposits at 1am, yeah i was armed.
i even asked a red bank cop that ate there all the time about the one threatening to cut me at night. i informed them i was armed, that when i left every night i had a bank deposit on me and what should i do if that situation happened? the reply was call 911 after and tell them to send an ambulance.
situational awareness is key even if you are not armed. it takes an assailant about 2 seconds to close a distance of 25 feet on you. think about that next time your walking alone around dusk downtown by yourself. you can not have that tunnel vision. you have to be totally aware of your surroundings. it is just like driving down a 4 lane interstate. use those mirrors. know where the other cars are at. i always use my mirrors as an "out" and what i mean by that is next time your in heavy traffic, ask yourself where you would go if the person in front of you slams on the brakes. chances are right up his ass. always have an out. be aware of what is going on around you.

"be aware of what is going on around you."
Some of the best advice you will ever get anywhere.

By the time the event happens that convinces you that it might be a good idea to have a gun, it might be too late.
If you are a dad, you are not just protecting your dumb ass, but you wife and kids too. Its irresponsible not to own firearms.
I have nothing against the cops protecting me, but they can only get to you so quick.
