Not necessarily for self defense or hunting, mainly for shooting paper. I own pistols, but pistols are not really as fun to shoot as rifles. This rifle is on my wish list: www.spa-simrad.com/sa_socom2.htm

How much do you want to spend? If you are looking for something that you can shoot all day and not spend much a Marlin mod 60 is a great rifle. It is a .22 LR and ammo is not that much (compared to 308, 30.06 etc). The rifle is not that expensive and will last for generations. Other then that the remington 700 is great too and you can get many extras for it. It is not that hard to mod for extra long range.

Allot of options! Are you interested in bolt action, lever action,semi-auto,or price?
IMO nothing beats an Evil Black Rifle! If price is a factor, then a Mosin Nagant is a hoot

I'll stick with my thank you very much. Ammo's cheap which is a good thing because it tends to fall out the end of the barrel. (Mine's an older model that does not have turn signals.)

all I have are a 1942 Lee-Enfield no.1 mk3 (.303 British) and an AR-15 (.223/5.56NATO)
however, if you want cheap, pick up a .22LR, other wise, I'd go with Pools recommendation of the Remington 700, I'd like one myself, but I think I'll try for the M1 Garand &/or M1A 30 Carbine.

I like all the recomendations. If I had the cash, I would buy them all... Even the "You'll put your eye out" one.

One of the main reasons I didn't recommend any of the otherwise very fine .22LR rifles is that I've always preferred target shooting with a rifle that has some authority.

>target shooting with a rifle that has some authority nothing better than a Garand I'm seriously considering a trip to the CMP store in Anniston AL... as soon as I have me some cash saved up... I'm just having a difficult time in deciding if I want an M1 Garand, or an M1 .30 Carbine....ah decisions.

True 'dat. But it is not a rifle for the novice shooter. I cut my teeth on an M1 Garand years ago and still love the "plink!" sound of a an ejected clip.
