In a wide-ranging talk about the Internet and government, Al Gore urged the techie crowd at South By Southwest to use digital tools to improve government. The former vice president sat for a conversation with Napster co-founder and Web entrepreneur Sean Parker on Monday at SXSW in a flashy tete-a-tete that drew an audience of thousands at the Austin Convention Center and more viewers via a live stream. "Our democracy has been hacked," said Gore, framing Washington gridlock and the effects of special interest money in digital terms. To fix what he called a no-longer functional U.S. government, Gore urged the audience to begin a new "Occupy Democracy" movement. He pushed for the creation and implementation of digital tools and social media to "change the democratic conversation." www.wrcbtv.com/story/17141465/gore-says-democracy-has-been-hacked-at-sxsw

Osrb, I believe Gore is that guy who claims to have invented the internet, shortly after I bought my first box Macintosh that had dual CD drives, and no hard disk. That is how the early 80's Mac's ran. Comical looking back after I thought I was so smart for mastering FORTRAN and basic, bahahahahah
Also, Al Gore is that guy that was cheating on his wife, who is responsible for music warning labels....

He claimed he took the initiative to create the internet and that isn't much different from claiming to have created the internet which isn't much different from claiming to have invented the internet. He was claiming to be a visionary on par with Bill Gates or Steven Jobs. But still, his claiming to have created the internet is a very specious and frankly indicative of the megalomania this man suffers from. He deserves all the ridicule and derision he has received from making this comment. Al Gore is the reason that every day I thank God for hanging chads. As bad of a president as Bush was I shudder to think where we would be if this mad man had taken office.

Gore no more said he invented the Internet than Eisenhower said he invented highways. What Gore did do was sponsor and propose legislation that took the Internet out of academia and into the general world, the same way Eisenhower pushed for the creation of the Interstate Highway system.
Seriously, read the link and try to set aside partisanship on this very old, very tired, and completely overwrought urban myth. Gore was no more arrogant than any other politician who runs for President or served as Vice President. To single him out for some of his very real and VERY beneficial accomplishments is, to me, a failure of partisanship over reality.
I didn't support Gore, I didn't think he would make a good President, and certainly find a lot of his "science" in his global warming efforts to be unsupported by actual peer-reviewed research, but it does not mean everything he has ever said or ever done is somehow wrong.

Gore no more said he invented the Internet than Eisenhower said he invented highways. What Gore did do was sponsor and propose legislation that took the Internet out of academia and into the general world, the same way Eisenhower pushed for the creation of the Interstate Highway system. Read what I wrote. I quoted Gore, "I took the initiative to create the Internet." I then went on to say that isn't far from the phrase that got passed around. He would have been more accurate to have said that he contributed to the environment that lead to the creation of the Internet. I'm the guy who dislikes both parties equally I just especially dislike Al Gore. Seriously this has nothing to do with partisanship and I read the link. I was very disappointed in the spin Snopes put on the story. No, Al Gore did not say he that he created the Internet, he said he took the initiative to create the Internet. He didn't say a thing about writing legislation to make it easier for the Internet to go public his statement was that he took the initiative to create the Internet, like "I got off my ass and went to work to create the Internet." That is real easy to paraphrase as "I invented the Internet." Snopes made it sound like he said absolutely nothing like he invented the Internet. That's as inaccurate as the myth they were attempting to bust. The fact that there are other arrogant politicians doesn't mean I should give him a pass. I singled him out in this thread because this thread is about him. I have exactly the same opinion of Gingrich as I do Gore. Not everything but at this point I'm hard pressed to remember something he did right.

'During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet.' How could anyone be confused over this quote?

Well, he did invent the internet and the internet is full of pornography, so TN voted him down as a pornographer.

Well, he did invent the internet and the internet is full of pornography, so TN voted him down as a pornographer. And he and Tipper were the inspiration for Love Story. The man is a legend. The "right wing" is cited for wanting to censor, but Tipper set up some pretty McCarthy like censorship trials. Of course the young doe eyed new left have forgotten all about that. He should be persona non-grata in TN.
