DAMASCUS – The Syrian regime acknowledged for the first time Monday that it possessed stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and said it will only use them in case of a foreign attack and never internally against its own citizens . Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the stockpiles are secure, in an apparent response to widespread international concerns that they could fall into the hands of the disparate bands of rebel forces fighting the government. "No chemical or biological weapons will ever be used, and I repeat, will never be used, during the crisis in Syria no matter what the developments inside Syria," he said in conference broadcast on state TV. "All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression." abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/arab-league-offers-assad-safe-exit-16834396#.UA0rfaMn2F0

Translation: Yes, we have them and we're going to use them.
When they do, unfortunately we'll be in. Israel certainly will be. It could get out of hand real quick with Russia and China being allies of Syria.

I doubt seriously we'd go in: the USA has quite a history of ignoring crimes against humanity, and there is no political will here to intrude into yet another Muslim country. I can think of absolutely no reason for Israel to involve itself. If it did, it would unite all of Syria, Iran and the Arab states against it.

If the regime falls, those weapons could fall into the hands of any number of groups that would just love to lob them into Israel. Hezbollah anybody? We're talking Sarin and Mustard gas here. Israel wants that shit locked down quick.

When Assad falls, during the ensuing chaos Israel could strike in such a way as to attempt to cripple Hezbolla; "surgical" munitions, a couple of very selective airborne incursions, in & out, then pull back and wait for any response (especially from Iran) that would "justify' further action. It would require to many IDF boots to "lock-down" anything, and the IDF is still smarting from the disastous incursion into Lebanon. Israel has some significant and sophisticated civil defense plans & prep as they have been facing these threats for decades. One might argue that Netanyahu would use this, a military strike, as a way of gaining more political support, but with the recent coaltion defection (over draft status of Haredim-ultra orthodox), the continuing disention RE: the "peace" process/Palestine/the Territories and the Israeli equivalent of OWS, he is unlikely to try such, given the rising chorus of retired IDF, Mossad and cabinet figures who are openly opposed to a strike of Iran, a potentially more serious threat.

I hope you're right.
I'm merely speculating, but it seems, when viewing the current global situation, that we may very well be on the precipice of major upheaval. In this time of severe global economic strife with no answers in sight, it seems the time is ripe for leaders of nations to become more and more extreme in order to hold on to power. To blame 'those people" for their problems.
I just feel we're on the cusp of something big. A global reset. The Syrian situation seems like a perfect set up for it. All the players are there. Putin, Romney?, Bibi, Ahkmadinnerjacket. Cooler heads this is not.
Just my opinion though.

AP had brief article on "Israeli fears" RE: Syrian CW. Go to haaretz.com/opinion/listen-to IDF-chief: Israeli chief of staff admonishing against over reaction (Bibi, Lieberman) and unnecessarily getting into a larger conflict.
