Cutting mandatory overtime leaves Hamilton County Jail shifts short staffed, records show by Beth Burger With mandatory overtime reduced at the Hamilton County Jail, corrections officers now are working below staffing levels outlined in the department's policy, according to documents obtained by the Times Free Press. Corrections officers are frequently unable to cover necessary positions; one lieutenant on second shift has documented running the jail with eight fewer officers than policy dictates, records show. On some shifts, only one officer is assigned to the fourth floor -- where inmates with mental or physical illnesses are housed along with sex offenders, according to some of the December duty rosters. When questioned about the shortage of officers on a floor, Hammond responded, "No, that's absolutely not true. I put an order down a year ago that I would absolutely not tolerate less than two officers on a floor." Read more: times free press

That's a tough call. Overtime shows a lack of planning. OT means own time in the public sector..

frayne has a point. I can vouch for the fact that these men and women work their rear ends off and deserve every penny they are paid.

Throw more resources into the Juvenile Court system and the Foster Care system and you could probably save a bundle on the running of the Hamilton County Jail.

I'm sure they do. Maybe we need to quit jailing the chicken shit money grabbing crap. Some of the crap people get jailed for is insane. Just look at a just busted sometime some of that crap should be a citation and summons to court. I'm from a big city you got caught with a small amount of the green sticky icky it was a ticket not a jail stay.
But theses municipalities love that fine and court cost money so much it's insane.

I love it when the criminal justice expert [singular] comes out at night
Keep that "hope and change" alive, and change the "chicken shit" laws (and who would better know about THAT) you don't like.
A sampling of recent warrant services would include a healthy dose of "Probation Violation", which means these fine citizens have ALREADY used their dozen Tennessee "get out of Jail free" cards.
The fines collected from them don't begin to approach the cost of administering their god damned stupidity which eventually lands them where they should have gone to start with--JAIL.
Stick to what you know--shit-talking and fucking profoundly up

If I had been paid for all my overtime for the last 16 years or so I would now be on a beach near the equator drinking rum.
