I'm wanting to learn how to make sushi (my cravings are getting the better of me) and thought perhaps someone on here could point me in the right direction. I need to learn to make my own because I don't think i can afford Nabe's everday. LOL. Help? Anyone?

I have all the stuff & you can get it at the Asian Market near Hixson Pike & Lupton Drive -- the basics -- sweet rice, seasoned vinegar, rolling matt, nori sheets, wasabi, pickled ginger, soy. Ask the proprietor to help get you started; the up-front costs will be @ $10 -- $15 & you'll save a ton...

Cool. Thanks, Kordax. I used to shop in there with a former friend. Haven't been in there for awhile. It'll be good to see them again. $10-20? I was expecting the initial start-up to run a lot more. Is the rolling difficult?

Is the rolling difficult?
By the time you roll 3/ 4, you're a pro. At 1st, the tendency is to make them too thick -- next time you're at a restaurant where they roll sushi, keep your eyes on the amount of rice the preparer puts on the nori & how it's spread on the surface before other ingredients are added -- that's the key.

Thanks. I'll do that. Thorne has promised me Nabe's this weekend. I'll be sure to sit at the bar so I can see the prep.

Do yourselves a huge favor and go to Hiroshis rather than Sushi Nabe. I assure you that you will not regret it.

What, specifically, is so much better at Hiroshi's than at Nabe's that would make me want to have my husband drive me all the way across town ? They are both excellent at what they do. And I like Nabe. He's a really nice guy.

I can assure you he is correct!! two thing (1) potato chip roll....who would have thunk it (2) exstacy roll...topped with baked scallop...amazing!! Drive across town? What are you talking about? Its like a 5-10 minute drive from each restaurant

Hiroshi is also a very nice person, and always willing to accomodate Mrs. Bears dietary problems (i.e. rice makes her blood sugar skyrocket) in some very innovative and tasty ways that Sushi Nabe has not cared to do. Also, it seems as if Hiroshi's does better on the restaurant inspections than does Sushi Nabe. Not something I obsess about normally, but we are talking raw fish here.
