So I don't come off as only a complainer....
Here's one for y'all... "New York Style Pizza"
4th Ave at 25th in an old Golden Gallon. Yeah, its across from East Lake Courts. Take out only.
Brooklyn family somehow ended up here in da hood and opened this joint.
Trust me, the Brooklyn owners are not afraid of the neighborhood nor should you be. Well lit parking at the front door.
Authentic 'fold it' to eat them slices. Homemade dough pizzas that don't fit into the box. The Philly Cheese Steak is worth the trip... enough for two meals.
Also on the menu: Pizzas, Calzones, Lasagna, Meatballs, Ziti, Eggplant, Stromboli, Jamaican beef patties, Chicken/Veal parmigiana, Ravioli, Penna alla Vodka, ... etc.
I had pizza last Saturday and the Philly Cheese on Monday... I will be back to try something else.
Check it out.
from the menu.. New York Style Pizza, 2701 4Th Ave., 629-1020

A while back they failed the heath inspection. Did they get that worked out?

They would have had to have gotten it worked out or they would no longer be opened...

And they have "punch cards" for a free crack pipe after just 10 visits!

They would have had to have gotten it worked out or they would no longer be opened... I realize that, I was just wondering what they did since it still doesn't look that great. You know, how did they actually pass?

Some of the things restaurants get dinged for on the inspections just don't bother me. So if a place has a low score, I look at what they got against them- sometimes it is something that, to me, is inconsequential. I know that there are reasons for them, but employees drinks do not bother me too much. Unless someone can tell me a reason that I should be concerned about it, as I have never worked in the biz. Now sometimes, the violations are such that I would avoid a place - especially when they find food temps out of range, or food spoiled, etc. A funny one I remember from several months ago was a mexican restaurant on Main St., I think. They had live chickens in the back.....

Don't know about the failure. If they did, I didn't see anything on my visits to scare me away. I spent many years in the kitchen and it gave me a somewhat of a six-sense for what is going on when I go into a restaurant.
I don't want to turn this into a Health Department thread, but, when I go into a restaurant I look at the corners... corners on the floors and corners on the ceiling. And I look at the HVAC vents. And I look at the area around the dumpster. Sadly, its unconscious, but I look.. if they are dirty, I know that they don't care about cleanliness. and if they don't care about cleanliness they don't care about holding temps which is what matters the most.
This pizza joint is clean.
And if you think that by having a high score is all that matters... a Chef in one of our local well-regarded establishments once told me that he would not serve anything he wouldn't eat himself.... And he said that in the context of telling a story about dropping a steak on the floor, washing it off under a faucet then throwing it back on the grill to re-heat. If you can't stomach that, you shouldn't be eating out. Honestly. It happens

Jamaican beef patties
Sounds interesting. And the rest does too. I'll have to run by there tomorrow on my way home from The Barn.

Some things don't bother me about the failures because some of them are crazy. One time we went somewhere to get a take out order and I noticed the guy cooking the burgers was drinking and munching away. I thought nothing of it until I got home and one of the burgers was half eaten!

I'd eat there. I read about the Hunan Wok failing their test, during their meal.
I was barely able to eat there again. Well, until lunch again the next day.

I read about the Hunan Wok failing their test, during their meal. I'm not sure I understand this. Did someone announce during their meal that they were failing? We've never eaten at Hunan Wok? Are they the same people that used to have Hunan Wok at Northgate?

I miss the one in Riverview where the Sonic is now located. They always had low scores, but I am pretty sure their kitchen was still cleaner than mine at the time, so I didn't mind.
