By Brian Lazenby and Lauren Gregory Staff Writers The number of attempted murder, aggravated assault and robbery cases rose dramatically in Hamilton County Juvenile Court last year, and local officials say the phenomenon is the result of less guidance at home and the increasing appeal of gangs. Juvenile Court Administrator Chris Albright said theft and property crimes were the bulk of offenses committed by children in the past, but that no longer is true. "Instead of just stealing something, now they are beating up someone to steal something," Mr. Albright said. "It's just a slow but steady decay in morals and less care for your neighbor." Without parental involvement, said Juvenile Court Judge Suzanne Bailey, children and teenagers are turning to violent gangs.

I attended a conference in Nashville today on forensic psych. The number of minors has grown significantly. There were something like 98 a few years ago...400 st now. Inpt. is not really the way to go. Cumberland Hall is the main choice now. the recommendation was to increase the number of out pt. or residential placements. There aren't that many juvenile forensic evaluators or placements now. That will need some immediate thought. This is across the state. Taft is not the answer for some of these young ones.

As a society that apparently excuses parental negligence and abuse to the point of the violent/painful death of a child, or children in some cases, it is no wonder our "forgotten" children are having some mental issues.

it is no wonder our "forgotten" children are having some mental issues.
Since institutions like juvenile courts, skools, mental health providers, the police, & mentoring organizations have become to varying degrees the surrogate parents for ever increasing numbers of disposable children, it seems like things are getting worse, not better. And it's not the fault of these non-parental organizations -- it just shows that society can't adequately take the place of families even when "families" self-destruct & abandon their roles ....

Kordax, I'm afraid you are right. Look at the kids "left behind"-the ones whose parents killed one of the kids or spouse, committed a crime, especially a sexual one, or have witnessed severe violence. Of course, that's not always true. Many adults have suffered through "stuff" and have done fine.
