$193.2 million plan - with 126 new cops - studied
By Jacinthia Jones
May 3, 2007 Memphis City Council members grilled police director Larry Godwin for more than three hours Wednesday on everything from overtime spending to community policing. Godwin is asking for $193.2 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1. His budget request -- the largest of any city division -- includes funding for 126 more police officers and more than $12 million in planned overtime spending. During budget hearings, Councilman Joe Brown complained about the apparent de-emphasis in community policing, adding that neighborhood CoAct units are understaffed. The CoActs are where residents can go to report crime, he said. "What would it take to bring community policing back to the optimum level?" Councilman Rickey Peete asked.
