posted May 4, 2007 A federal judge in Nashville has granted a new delay in the execution of Phillip Workman for killing a Memphis police officer in 1982. Workman had been set to be put to death by lethal injection on Wednesday. However, his attorneys challenged a new state protocol for the use of lethal injection. The new protocol was devised by the state after Gov. Phil Bredesen set a temporary moratorium on executions while the state's method of execution could be studied. The moratorium expired at the end of April. Judge Todd J. Campbell granted a temporary restraining order sought by attorneys for Workman, who was convicted for killing Memphis Police Lieutenant Ronald Oliver at a fast food restaurant.
