To Include 29 School Resource Officers
Budget Would Go Up $3.4 Million
posted May 7, 2007 Sheriff Billy Long is asking the County Commission to approve 63 new positions for his department, including 29 School Resource Officers. He said that would give an SRO to every high school and middle school in the county. Sheriff Long said some of the positions are needed at the overcrowded County Jail and others to help with a backlog on delivering court papers and going after fugitives. The request would raise the sheriff's budget from $24.2 million to $27.6 million. Sheriff Long, presenting his first budget since defeating longtime incumbent John Cupp, said 53 of the requested positions would be fulltime.

County offices seeking more money, programs Tuesday, May 08, 2007
By Ian Berry Staff Writer With schools possibly in line for more than $10 million in state funding this year, Hamilton County commissioners on Monday heard requests for significant funding increases in other areas, the sum of which could mean a tax increase if approved in the upcoming year's budget. Sheriff Billy Long issued the largest requested increase on the first day of budget hearings, asking for an additional $3.4 million. Much of the 12 percent increase would go to provide at least one school resource officer at every school in the county. Sheriff Long was one of three presenters asked by Commissioner Richard Casavant if he would support a tax increase, and the only one to answer directly. He said the added officers would be an important crime-fighting tool and that he would "stand behind" the commission if they decided on an increase. School resource officers were a centerpiece of his campaign last year and are a centerpiece of his administration. Directness.......That would be new for a politician around here.

He was bound to do something to piss me off, sooner or later. Piss on a tax increase. Support eliminating bloat from other areas of the budget, not piling on more taxes. Bad Billy, bad, no bone for you. Especially for SRO's. Nothing says "I give up" more than putting cops in the school. It means we as a society have failed at addressing the real problem (the problem that causes the need for a cop in a school to begin with) and are content to putting band aids over the ulcerous sores as they break out. Personal responsibility has been done away with to the point that we need cops at a school to keep our kids in line, and we need more and more tax money to pay for it. Hurray for Billy for having a stand and being man enough to say tell it, but boo to him for supporting yet another tax increase.
