NEW YORK - Betty and Bob Matas have retired and are moving to Arizona, but like many New Yorkers they don't drive, and they don't want their cats to travel all that way in an airliner cargo hold. Their solution: "Hey, cabbie." They met taxi driver Douglas Guldeniz when they hailed his cab after a shopping trip several weeks ago. They got to talking about their upcoming move, and "we said 'Do you want to come?'" said Bob Matas, 72, a former audio and video engineer for advertising agencies. "And he said 'Sure.' story

"Guldeniz driving his yellow SUV cab 10 hours a day for a flat fee of $3,000, plus gas, meals and lodging." That's just insane. I'm sure they could have found somebody to rent a car and drive 'em there for less than that.... Couldn't they?... Ahhhh, they shoulda just flown and sold the cats

I would do it for sure. I love driving cross country. there is nothing like watching the scenery slowly change as you cross America. I drove from Las Vegas Nevada to Panama City Florida once. I was on a tight timetable. I'd love to do it again, but with more time for stopping.

How many of you have ever driven cross-country? I drove from San Francisco to Key West back when I was 22. An amazing trip.

My husband, before he was my husband, while in the Marine Corps, drove from Norfolk, VA to San Bernardino, CA. He was 21 at the time. After we got engaged we drove from Norfolk to Austin, TX straight through. Now that sucked! Never again... Laura

Chattanooga to Homer or Homer to Chattanooga 4 times, DC to Chattanooga to Homer once, SLC to Homer once.
BTW, when I got my '85 Supra in DC, my wife and I were driving across Canada and stopped to view a beautiful lake and glacier in Banff. A busload of Japanese tourists stopped to take a look as well. All the old jokes about Japanese and their cameras aren't really jokes, as I learned when I lived in Guam, and some of these people would have been the envy of some TV stations. What blew my wife's mind was when one of them saw my car, pointed to it, and about half a dozen of them came over and started filming my car. She cannot seem to comprehend the difference between an old car and a classic. (It made it worse when we got to Anchorage, and two carloads of guys, one in a BMW convertible the others towing a $200,000 boat had to come over, look under the hood, etc.

Well, if they could still drive, that'd be something too... It just seems awfully expensive... I drove from New York City to Chattanooga once.... It was a fun road trip, but took forever

Chattanooga to Rand OR to San Fransisco to Chattanooga in 11 days, with mom, dad, grandma, grandad, my brother and my sister. Fun trip, saw all the cool sights, but most for no more than an hour or two. Half day in Vegas was the longest we stayed anywhere.

I'd list my many, many long distance trips, but I'll leave it at this....
I don't call it a "long drive" until it exceeds 10 hours actual road time.

One of my cross-North America trips (5,000 miles) was made in 4.5 days.
We had planned on taking 10 days and doing some touristy stuff.
The first day we drove to SD, the second we saw Banff.
The third day we discovered forest fires and drove all day.
We stopped to sleep, and when lightning hit about 30 yards from the car and started another fire, we moved on. Saw 3 more fires start.
Drove straight through the rest of the way.

I was exhausted, but it was either drive or burn.
I chose driving.
