Thoughts? I had an expensive lunch and left hungry. The food was good but very small portions. I paid $7 for a brie and cheddar grill cheese and was told that it was "pretty big". I ate the whole thing in about 4 bites because it was so small. Also paid $4 for a cup of soup that was extremely small. Cool atmosphere and the menu changes daily I believe so maybe I just caught it on a bad day. I did see a table next to me that had ordered some salads that looked to be very generous portions.

Service was fine. Nothing special. Waiter was very attentive but when I tried to get him to tell me a little more about the menu items, he wasn't much help.

They have had a problem (at least on one occasion) with very bad service. There is a review about that in this forum somewhere.

Thanks, I'll try a search on it.

A friend and I had lunch today there; we both ordered the Kobe beef burgers. They were excellent and cooked exactly to our specifications and a good size since the Kobe is so rich. For appetizers we had wings, and they were good also. The french fries were presented nicely but almost identical to Steak and Shake's. The salad offerings and desserts were tempting, but we passed -- I'll definitely need a salad and veggies tonight to offset the wings and beef.

My husband and I tried this restaurant the other night looking for something different. The menu did not have a lot to choose from that we would eat. The special of the night was a ribeye and was $21. We both ordered the Sirloin with Au Pauve (sry i know i am misspelling that).. it came with either a side OR salad. We got our salads after about 10 mins. They were ok but nothing special. We waited about another 20 minutes our waitress came out and said our steaks were almost done. Within that 20 mins we heard 2 HUGE crashes in the kitchen and dishes breaking. After that 20 mins our waitress came out and said "I'm sorry - I thought the chef was taking your steaks off the grill - he was just putting them on.." She did bring us some bread and apologized for the wait. We ate the bread and waited some more. After about another 15-20 mins the steaks came out. We ordered them medium but when I cut into mine my husband started laughing because the sauce had pools of blood in it. The steaks were very rare but the outer portion was charcoal. I cut the top and bottom of the steak off and ate the rest of it.
I still think for the price the meal needs to come with a side AND a salad. We ate our small steaks and after dinner left hungry. We were given a coupon for 1/2 an entree on our next visit but I am not sure we will return. If I am going to pay $50+ for dinner I do not want to leave hungry!

Blacksmith’s
We had eaten at Blacksmith’s a few times in the past; a couple of lunches and a brunch. Service had always been accurate and timely and the food well prepared. Noteworthy were the creative quiches which seem to have had egg whites folded in to give an almost soufflé texture. Soups were good, but inconsistent and a bit dear at $4 a cup. We have recently gone for dinner. We were using a gift coupon from restaurant.com, which I strongly disrecommend. The copy I had downloaded and printed wasn’t sufficient. However, the manageress was extremely helpful and allowed us use of the office computer to get the required information. The wooden table was a bit sticky from long use. Unpleasant. A coat of plastic would be more hygienic and easier to clean. The menu was much reduced from previous visits, and is used for lunch and dinner, perhaps a reflection of the owner’s involvement with their infant. Our server(s) were quite attentive and engaging even tho most customers had chosen to eat outside on the patio. The limited menu held little interest for me, so I ordered the steak with au poivre sauce only to be told they were out of the sauce. ( Steak au poivre is lightly crusted with crushed pepper sautéed and the pan deglazed with brandy. Were they out of pepper corns?) Truffle butter was the other option. The generous piece of properly cooked steak was surrounded by an equally generous layer of fat. The truffle butter needed coaxing to melt, but the resulting flavors were pleasant. The fries, served in a paper cone were good, but lost their crispness below the first layer or so. Pan seared salmon with romesco sauce over polenta cake was spot on; well cooked fish, matched with an unobtrusive sauce. A well conceived and executed dish. With a glass of wine our tab was about $25 per person. Numerous writers on this and other forums have reported poor, slow service and aggressively rude behavior from the owners. We have not experienced this, although the owners were not on premises when we had dinner there. None the less, the consistency of the bad reports may give you pause. And it is an individual decision if the food is worth the price. However, I know of no better place to eat in the St. Elmo area.
