DEAR MARGO: Does having lunch and/or drinks every week or two with a friend of the opposite sex mean you're having an affair? My friend and I are both married and have known each other for over a year now. Our professional lives cross quite frequently. We constantly e-mail each other throughout the day, just to make the other one smile and laugh. He insists he loves his wife, and I know how much I love my husband. We've been with our spouses for approximately 18 years. It's just lunch or a few drinks after work. Neither of our spouses knows about this. We don't think they would understand. He is a gentleman and has never made an advance. We do talk sexually, but it's just talk. My sister-in-law insists this is an affair. So, is this, or is this not, an affair? story

Gee, I thought this was a continuation of the "Things you misunderstood as a child" thread.

If they feel the need to hide it from their spouses, that's a pretty good indication that they are up to no good.

It's not cheating, yet. But they'll be bumping uglies any day now, whether they want to admit it or not.

I've noticed he's been kind of slacking lately, too.

So, based on some of the replies the theory that a man and woman can carry on a close friendship for many many years without gettin it on is still alive and well on this forum.
(If they're right, I'm getting it a whole lot more than I recall, indicating it isn't very good sex to say the least!)

I think the key to this letter was that they were keeping it a secret from their spouses. Lots of people do lunch with other married people that they work with but they don't try to hide it and most (that work together) wouldn't talk sexually to each other I wouldn't think. edited for typos

Reminds me of that cell phone commercial where the guy is like "dude, why do you have my GF in your fav5" and he's like "it's no big deal" and then she calls and the phone starts playing "secret lovers". LOL

That commercial cracks me up... If I found out my wife was meeting someone for drinks after work and kept it from me, I would be pissed. You should not have to hide things from your spouse if there is nothing going on. I would also have a problem with my wife talking sexually to another man. That is where it starts.
