I did not listen to all of the address, but Mr. Tanner notes some of the incongruities of what is happening under the present-day Republican Party, which in few ways other than name resembles the party for which my parents voted. The Cato Institute book page for Mr. Tanner's book is here.

I agree Marvell.
When I, and some of my cohorts, became involved with the GOP in the eighties, we were led by the small government philosophies of Goldwater and Reagan...and even Newt Gingrich. It propelled some on to public service and paved the way for a broader political base among the GOP. Unfortunately, many of those who came afterwards were not a product of that philosophy but were merely a product of new political opportunities, many narrowly focused on specific issues and not really motivated by broader core philosophies. Some were products of of the religious right, for example.
What I have witnessed, over the years, is in complete agreement with what Tanner is talking about. The GOP has lost its way over the years, much like the democrat party lost its way after the death of JFK when government began to grow through LBJ's Great Society Programs.
