we too are surprised that our cold-weather crops are still producing; fennel, fava beans (!) Eggplants about to burst forth. Tomatoes are a mixed bag depending, it seems, on variety. Our rosemary & sage are year-round producers. Hope to have figs next year ( and rapini).

What do you get when a giant steps in your garden?
Squash.

Appreciate the link. The strays seem to be getting out of control again in the neighborhood. Time to call McKamey and see if they're as useless as other posters have found them to be in this regard.

It seems I have a problem with poison ivy. It cropped up under a maple tree in my front yard. How do I kill it and not the tree? I'm very allergic, so ripping it up is dicey.

Take concentrated Round-up (not the premixed) and an old small brush and paint the Roun-up directly on the leaves, don't touch them and don't overuse the round-up cause a little goes a long way.

I have little luck growing onions, I guess I don't have good soil for onions or I just don't get it worked up right, but check out this new world record onion: A British gardener has set a new record for cultivating the world's heaviest onion. Tipping the scales at 17lbs 15.5 oz, the monster vegetable beat the previous record by nearly a pound and a half.

End of growing season request: If you have any vegetables that you no longer want to mess with or are too green for you to use (peppers, cucumbers, squash or tomatoes), I can use them in chow-chow. I am willing to come get them and even harvest them if it would be easier for you. Anyone who donates some veggies is guaranteed at least a pint of chow-chow.

I have picked the last of my peppers and green tomatoes prior to last Friday morning's freeze. I made 9 pints of chow chow. Yoda might be able to let us know if it passes muster.
I'm thinking of experimenting with some different varieties of peppers next year to give my chow chow some extra kick.
I have moved my basil, thyme and golden oregano inside for the winter. The Sage, Rosemary, Bee Balm, spearmint & peppermint fend for themselves over winter. I rarely lose any, even in the bitterest of weather.

Some of those herbs are hard to kill even if you try.

I actually have some jalapeno pepper plants still growing with small peppers on them. They are up against the foundation and seem to be doing well. Fresh peppers in January?
