I have a pregnant onion that needs a home. I'm not here often enough to keep it watered and no one else seems aware there's living things that should be kept that way here. It'll want some TLC to get back to being in full leaf and happy, but if you get it there it'll bloom and make all kinds of babies for you. They're nifty plants.

Well, that's a cool plant! But, alas, I have no space at this point.

Pot's the same size as those citronella candles you can get at Kmart.

Well, I don't guess it's EVER going to stay cold enough for optimum fruit tree pruning...at least I'll be warm this week when I accomplish said task.

Re-potted my aloe plant and 4 "babies." I also potted up 12 various ivy cuttings that had been rooting all winter.

I planted a butterfly bush two weeks ago that's still managing to survive my lack of attention.

Just got out there and pruned my Crepe Myrtle. I only do it once ever 3 years or so. I'm not really keen on keeping mine in that short bush shape that seems to be preferred by the City of Red Bank. I like a taller, tree shape. I kept the side branches clipped until the main 'trunks' got above my head, then trimmed them ONCE... let it grow a few years... Today was the 2nd time I've stood on a ladder trimming the tops off as far above my head as I could reach. This should be the last time I ever have to trim it. It's nice and tall and then branches out only well over 8 feet from the ground. Makes it MUCH easier to walk under.

Warkitty, do you still want to get rid of your onion plant? BTW, what ever happened with Bloodhound's venus fly trap?

Nope, the pregnant onion is still in my kitchen window.

Does that mean that you're keeping it?

Thanks for the plant. Marvell has a perfect place for it in his window. We didn't realize it was poisonous, and didn't want to chance Lucy or one of the cats chowing down on it.

Yes, I wanted to be sure when he came by that I stated that. I remembered you have cats. Good thing I said something! The name is misleading, but it does send up a stalk with white flowers from time to time, when kept happy.

Apricots are starting to turn "peach" colored...won't be but a few more weeks before they are ready. The grapes have formed, and are starting to grow. It is now time to get tomato & pepper plants in, if you haven't already.

Speaking of tomatoes; does anyone know where I could find Cherokee Purple plants? I meant to order seeds but put it off too long.

The Barn Nursery had a good variety, but not sure if Cherokee Purple was among them.

Used to be a guy in Cleveland that had a sign in his yard offering "black tomato" plants, maybe those where actually purple. I'll be in that neighborhood tomorrow, maybe I'll check it out, seems like that would be an interesting addition to my garden.

What's the pros and cons on whether to stake or cage a tomato plant?
|
|
|
Post by LimitedRecourse on May 26, 2008 19:42:52 GMT -5
Personal preference. If you stake them, you can have taller plants. If you cage them, you have more support options, but usually smaller/shorter plants. I cage them AND stake them, after they grow taller than the cage. The cage offers more support for the younger more delicate plants.
I spent a few hours this weekend putting in tomato & pepper plants. THANKS, KORDAX!!!

Thanks from me too, Kordax.
I don't stake or cage. I let them ramble.

Thanks, Kordax! Small world isn't it? I cage mine to begin with, then I stake them as needed.
