That's a nice sentiment, but you are supposed to replace ragged flags.

Isn't that a distress signal?

Flying it upside down is a distress signal. RBMS flies theirs upside down at least 3 days every year and this was not the first time it's been up there sideways. This lack of respect for that flag has been going on for years. I get to deal with the upset Vets who come into my shop and see 'Old Glory' hanging in strange directions. I've even had Vets call from their cell phones to complain while standing in my shop. I just keep wondering, AM I the only one who ever notices it?

That's really bad. Whoever is in charge of putting the flag up needs to not do it any more...

So you replace a ragged flag.
Don't you just LOVE the fact that those that wave the flag the most respect it the least?

Flying it upside down is a distress signal. ... Actually: from: United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1 — The FlagSection 8a. The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

There is a marked difference between the ceremony and respect attendant to a flag's cremation vs that of a flag burning in protest.

I was not referring to those that would burn the flag in protest. I was referring to those that wear the flag as their clothes, make kites out of it, print it in their advertising, etc. Those that yell the loudest that they are patriotic tend to show absolutely no respect for it.

ahhh...then we are in agreement.
But these are changing times...
Public sentiment and custom will dictate the future letter of the law.... the law that serves at the behest and design of the people.
..or is supposed to do so.
...but therein be dragons.

I think it's high time the school appoint some group (boy scouts/girl scouts/ROTC whatever) to take care of the flag in a proper manner. I know at Hixson, the JROTC there does take care of the raising and lowering of the flag. My son is in the ROTC there and has done it on occasion. There was a time when we drove by the school on a weekend and he noticed that it was still up. He made a point to tell the Colonel about it on the following Monday. Don't think they've had any problems since. My son is the Color Guard Commander there and takes tremendous pride in what he does. He gets irritated when he sees the way some flags are improperly cared for around town.

I remember being a scout. Back in '76 we took a special class in D&C (Drill and Ceremony) relating to flag care and presentation. Then in the Army we were drilled over it again. It surprised me how few of my company in basic training had no concept of the ceremony involved prior to service.

I don't think Red Bank Middle still has an ROTC. Would explain a few things.
BTW - I was going to bring this up at the City Council meeting tonight. However, the meeting ran VERY long as they had a packed agenda.
The meeting started off with a rather lengthy discussion about the traffic cutting through White Oak park. Reports were given about traffic flow data collected by an automatic counting machine. The police department suggested that the gate remain open and everything basically be left alone. Commissioners suggested turning the road through the park into a one way street. Objections from the floor were asked to wait until the 'Citizen's coments' section of the meeting.
City Manager Dorsey presented his 87 page report on the proposed budget for next year. He reported that there will be No property tax increase and that the new budget does allow for demolition of condemned houses and enforcement of codes.
The commissioners needed to appoint a commissioner to replace Mr. Howard Cotter who resigned 2 months ago. (The voting was 2 for Mr. Monty Mallard and 2 for Mr. Virgil Adams. On the 3rd vote, Mr. Pat Brown changed his vote to support Mallard.) Monty Mallard was sworn into office in an inpromptu ceremony by one of the local judges in attendence. Then they elected a new Vice Mayor. Mr. Ronnie Moore and Ms. Floy Pierce were nominated, but Ms. Pierce stepped down in favor of Mr. Moore.
Mayor Glasscock presented artwork for approval for a memorial plaque and flag to be included in the Bi-Lo plaza 'park'. A local man will be donating the funds for the memorial. A few other matters were discussed.
As a last action, Mr. Pat Brown read his letter of resignation. The commissioners commented that the city charter did not allow for a 2nd commissioner to be appointed by the board. They announced that a special election will have to be held. (Most people suspect that Mr. Adams will win the next seat, but that was not spoken aloud in the meeting.)
By the time the meeting move along to the Citizen's comments, it was after 8:30 and I had not had my dinner. Starving, I just didn't want to sit through the neighborhood lady complaining about the traffic going through the White Oak park. My mother and I snuck out without mentioning the flag.
If a NEW flag is not flying CORRECTLY over the school by the next meeting, I'll bring it up then. For now, it looks like the school has gotten a clue that SOMEONE pays attention to what they do over there.

Our local middle school did that, and we called the police because we assumed they were in dire distress.
Over-reaction? No. It was a bunch of maggot-infested hippie types making a "point" about Bush.
Hasn't happened since.

The one and only time I got picked to take the flag down, I was pissed because I didn't get to FOLD the flag. They only let me hold it. It was still an honor and a privolage to get to do it. Apparently, that feeling does not translate to kids of today.

I remember being pissed off in HS when I saw some classmates take down the flag and fold it like a sheet.
I tried to correct them. I tried. Every fiber of my ex-girl scout being screamed that they surely were just naive to the correct way. Nope. They were just lazy and wanted it over with.

When our flag got ripped and needed to be replaced, I asked my daughter (SDHS JROTC) about the proper procedure for disposing of a flag. She informed me that I needed to cut out each star and each stripe, and then burn it.
We did.

My grandson got to participate in retiring a flag when he was in the Boy Scots. He is 12 now and has more appreciation for the flag than most teens or young adults. When Papaw's flag got ragged he brought it to his attention. Also, when President Ford died he was adamant about flying it at half mast. Scouts are good for something. He has learned a lot of respect for things.

The ROTC does a great job at the funerals at our National Cemetary on Holtzclaw. A very solemn and moving ceremony. Before our latest war you could get an actual player for the trumpet but now it is recorded music. I think they use Army Reserve people too. That flag ceremony gets me everytime. I can go through an entire funeral but once they start folding the flag my tears just flow.

Yep. RBMS got it right today. It was the first thing I checked when I got to work. It's amazing how fast that got fixed after TWO vets (one of them was Kroisis) walked in to personally complain about it. The first one was a young man that looked like he had just gotten back from the Middle East. He had threatened to climb the pole and take it down himself. (He was a bit hot under the collar.) Then Kroisis showed up with 'that crazy look in his eye'. I think someone got scared.

Good for you, Krosis (sp) and the other citizens! A lot of people don't want to get involved. But in a school of all places! Surely someone there would know it was in poor repair!
