As Jay's link says, there's probably nothing harmful about acai berries, but doubtful they're the revolutionary diet innovation they're being hyped as.

It's the "Oprah effect." Somebody mentions something on her show; she smiles and nods, and next thing you know, it's a cottage industry. Note, every ad you see is a "free trial offer, you just pay S/H." You order one bottle with a credit card, which gets you more and more bottles in the mail every month (at regular price) and it takes major time and effort to cancel. Eventually it will end up in the stores and the market will take over. Everyone pushing it now knows the gravy train will end soon; they're just trying to cram on as many passengers as they can until then.
