The Susan G. Komen Chattanooga Race for the Cure® celebrates 10 years on Sunday September 27, 2009 beginning at 2 PM as they kick off Chattanooga’s premier fundraising event in the fight against breast cancer.
The race takes place at the UTC McKenzie Arena located on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus.
Chattanooga joins 120 cities around the world hosting what is labeled the largest 5K in the world, expecting to attract over 1,800,000 participants worldwide.
This year’s Chattanooga Race Committee anticipates 6,300 or more area residents will walk and run to raise breast cancer awareness in the community and show support for local breast cancer survivors.
Over 400 volunteers will be on hand to oversee the race, food, entertainment and a special breast cancer survivor salute which will take place at 1PM on the steps of the McKenzie Arena.
Many walkers and runners will be members of over 100 local corporate, family, church and schools teams that have registered. Kellie Jolly Harper, a former standout Lady Vol under legendary coach Pat Summit, and currently head coach at NC State replacing legendary Coach Kay Yow, who lost her battle with breast cancer, will serve as Honorary Race Chair.
Participants can choose between a 3.1 mile walk or run or a 1 mile fun run or walk. All events take a place along Chattanooga’s downtown streets and the banks of the Tennessee River.
