Human behavior is fascinating, but sometimes it's just so baffling.
What is with people who call you, knowing perfectly well that they're going to get your voice mail, when they also know that calling a different number or at a different time can give them the live YOU?
Two examples.
My son's grandmother was famous for calling around 11:30 on Sunday morning. She would state her full name and state of residence (as if we didn't know), then say something like "I'm sure you're at church." Well, duh, she also knows we get HOME from church by 1:00 or so, so why couldn't she call then? And no, her schedule isn't that busy where she couldn't call later.
On the rare occasions when we didn't go to church and picked up the phone to answer, she always sounded so flustered. Instead of "Oh, good, I caught you at home," it was always "What? You're not at church? Aren't you always out at church at this time of the day on Sunday?" I once answered sarcastically "Okay, next time I'll just let the machine pick up," and she said "Good!"
More recently, my BFF calls on Saturday mornings, right at the time when I'm out taking my husband to work. Now, my ex-MIL had the excuse that the only number she could reach me at was home, but my friend knows my cell phone number and also knows I always have it with me and it's usually turned on. She leaves messages such as "I didn't know if you were on the road like you usually are on Saturday mornings, or not..." Well, yeah, I am! As usual! So call my cell phone, for pete's sake. I had gotten so many messages like this from her, I'd started getting into the habit of checking the machine upon arriving home after dropping my husband off, but it's been a few months since she'd done this, I'd fallen out of the habit. I wonder if she stopped doing it just long enough for me to stop checking the machine. I see no point in calling her back at 1pm, since every time she leaves me one of these messages, she's on her way out to an all-day session of working or geocaching and won't be able to answer the phone anyway.
I've become passive-aggressive now, and reply to her messages by e-mail, being sure to include my cell phone number in LARGE TYPE.
Anybody know why people do this?
