With all the advantages Chattanooga has for an active lifestyle....
Ah well, if all you fat slobs got into them like I have we'd have more bikes on the road (forcing drivers to be wary, it's now been shown that in cities were cycling is more common there are fewer auto-cyclist accidents per capita), more sidewalks as pedestrians would demand them which would mean more safe routes to schools for the kids. We'd have more playgrounds, possibly more dog parks, and maybe generally happier people as endorphins tend to make for happy folk.
We'd also have lower health costs overall, though emergency care for the more extreme sports might pick up. Most folk I imagine would go for less extremes though, like hiking, running or cycling.

You tell 'em Warkitty ! ! ! ! I've seen people in wheel chairs because they are too fat to walk. Lose 100 pounds, maybe you could walk again. If you are too fat to get up and walk to the table, I will not bring you food.

I'd like to read some of the source material for that assertation; when you factor in Chattanooga's hilly, curvey, narrow, and often shoulderless commuting corridors and couple those adverse road conditions with an aggressive, enviro-centric, ongoing appeal to recruit more & more bicyclists on to dangerous roadways, makes me wonder about other cities' commuter routes & their attitudes re bicyclists' safety....

Almost every one of the fittest states are blue states, and every one of the unhealthy states are southern red states, yet the blue states want universal health care and Jesusland is against it. Quite telling, and affirming of my notion that many uninformed people vote against their own interests.

many uninformed people vote against their own interests. You're quite right, but this destructive socialized medicine bill is dropping in popularity, so people are becoming more educated about it.

They ought to put a sin tax on fast and fatty foods, and all dessert type foods.

Anchorage is one of the healthiest, and Alaska is one of the most obese.
I suspect, but don't know, that a lot of the obesity is among the eskimos.

Let's face it. Poor people are fat. Fresh veggies and lean meat cost more than hotdogs and mac and cheese. Poor people live in crime ridden areas where it's not safe to let children go outside to play so they learn to sit inside.
Heck! These days, the media has parents so screwed up thinking that child predators are lying in wait to snatch your children that no one lets the kids out in their own yards without parental supervision and who has time for that? So kids get parked in front of the TV or video game with bag of chips and a bologna on white bread.
For a huge segment of our population, food is their only comfort. A bike costs about $100 and you need a safe place to ride. A bag of Chips Ahoy are buy one get one free. You get (almost) the same endorphin rush from carbs, fat and sugar. There's a chain lock on the door and A/C inside.

Actually, I can get fresh veggies much cheaper than a bag of chips. Unlike a bag of chips (or hot dogs or mac and cheese) you actually have to spend a few moments preparing them.

I hear ya ScarlettP but beg to differ. I think Americans (myself included to some extent) have become fat, dumb, lazy and spoiled over the past fifty years. 24/7 TV, computers, video games, fast food and unhealthy eating habits are driving diseases like obesity and diabetes through the roof.
Sure sometimes there are hereditary factors at play but much of the time these problems are self induced.

Hey, it takes time to properly prepare the chips, too! First you have to melt the chocolate to dip them in, then you have to round up the powdered sugar and then dig around for the sprinkles - - - unless you prefer the dipping-chips-in-gravy recipe, and then you get into the argument about which gravy to use. Brown? Chicken? Au Jus? Red-eye? Tomato(yuck)? Sawmill? Oh, and don't forget the side order of fatback. What good are chips without fatback! And Coke.
I'm hungry.

And just like the Romans, we're trying to fix costs of stuff so we can have more stuff at cheaper prices.
