I hate cats. I am allergic to cats. So, who dumped the kitten on my property??? It can't be over eight weeks old. It is not cold and it is not starving. It has found a place to sleep in our smoke house. My husband took an old blanket and made a bed. I didn't realize cat food was so expensive. There are two bowls, one in the smoke house, the other one on the front porch where the scared little tiny kitty likes to cry. I am really mad as hell. How can anyone do this to a helpless animal???

LOL! You know, I hate cats also. But my son gave me grief when I fed the skinny, one eyed pitiful thing that used to hang out near the shop. I may not want one, but I can't stand to see anything suffer.

We checked late last night. Most of the food was gone. I feel so sorry for the little thing. It is completely wild. You can't get within 10 yards of it.

Just thought I'd let you know that Kitty Kat is eating very well. Still a little afraid, but it walks away instead of running. Any one want a cat?

Glad to hear the little fur ball is eating. But no thanks. I've got two big, lovey dogs out back who have been known to eat everything that wanders into the yard, including rats, snakes, a turtle, opossums, TRIED to get a raccoon, and we did find remains of a cat once. Not a good idea.
At work, I have two neighborhood cats that have adopted my porches. I've got a black & white 'cow spotted' one and the other has white legs and that tiger stripe (tortoise shell?) pattern on it's back. These two seem perfectly healthy and do not hang out together. But both can frequently be seen lounging around. I have no idea where they 'live'.

My sister-in-law in Ga. has a neighbor who travels frequently. His cat, Max, spends most of his time at her house because she puts out food. Jet black, needs grooming, but the sweetest disposition you can possibly imagine. My SIL has a shih-tzu that tries to get romantic with Max. They're both about the same size. Max puts up with this in a resigned fashion, then says "enough" and climbs to the deck rail where the dog can't follow. We're visiting for Thanksgiving and looking forward to seeing Max more than we are family...

Just put food out, speak kind words to him and otherwise ignore him. He will come ask for affection when he wants it. the big thing is getting him/her "fixed" because once he/she reaches puberty you're going to have problems. male cats "spray" and female cats have kittens..

Yes... And apparently one of the cats that hangs around my shop dropped off some kittens for me also. *sigh* My niece was the first one to hear them and tried to go under the floor to find them. She said at least one is alive, one dead. But she couldn't quite reach the dead one to remove it. Will the mother cat take it away?

I am using tissue right now. We've had problems with our neighbor's dogs. One had three huge mutts, the other has two. I have seen one of the dogs actually kill and eat a deer. I cried on that one and promised to shoot the dog if it ever came on my property. I really don't know what happened to the poor kitty. I know I tried to save him or her. But, the kitty is no longer here. I can only hope (pray) that Momma found it and took it home. At least, that's the hope I'm hanging on to.

An interesting reminder of our uniqueness as a species: ohwell feels grief & guilt over a kitten who came uninvited onto her property and disappeared under totally unknown circumstances. There aren't any other animals who would experience this. We bear a lot of unintended burdens just by virtue of being what we are.

Thread Jacking update - Cow spot cat seems to be the mother of one. She moved her one kitten to a box of scraps on the front porch. Here's the ironic thing. We were saving those scraps for a lady who makes bags for sugar gliders. Now it's gone from squirrel bedding to kitty bed.

I guess the kitty just reminded me of life on earth. You can be mistreated, abused and neglected. No one gives a shit. Well, I do. A lot of things bother me. Abuse of others with no one defending them bothers me. I don't care if you have two legs or four.

1) Rune we're only just starting to scratch the surface of animal intelligence and have no ability to prove or disprove animal emotions like grief. I'd hesitate to say we're the only one's simply because there's no way of knowing that is true. I can tell you that anecdotal evidence indicates that the more social animals like parrots do grieve for the loss of creatures they may not have even liked.
2) ohwell, I'm with you on that and I'm so sorry the kitten disappeared. I have taken on the responsibility of caring for a creature I didn't care for, only to grieve horribly at its loss. Once we give some compassion to another, I think it sparks that love in us. It speaks volumes in your favor that you not only fed the poor little thing and showed it some kindness but feel her disappearance so keenly despite not caring for her species in general. There's hope for you to be a friend to the kitties yet:-D

Sometimes cats just like to explore. He/she may have been taken in temporaraly by someone. He'll likely be back. We have four cats. I know about these things!

I really hope the little thing is back with its mother. At least that's what I will continue to hope.
I have to tell you my experience with cats. We had a Siamese kitten one time. I was always saying, "Damn it, shut up", Damn it, get down from there". The cat's name became Damnit. Every time I took it to the vet, the vet asked if we had named the cat yet. I would just smile and say no. Had to give the cat away. That's when I found out I was allergic to cats.

I'm dancing, I'm happy!!!! The mother came to collect her young. She lives next door. The house is empty. One son takes care of things. He came over tonight and asked us if the cats were a problem. They are wild, but he leaves food. At least there is hope. So, we gave him the cat food. Given the chance, the little fellow would have had a home and proper care. But, maybe all will turn out for the good.
Warkitty, thanks for the support.

What does furrbutts have to do with this conversation of an orphaned kitten??? Please explain. Rude? ? or is he vulgar?

SKB raises sugar gliders. Calling them furrbutts is, in SKBspeak, a term of endearment. SKB is merely asking if the lady you know merely makes the bags for raising sugar gliders or if she actually raises them herself.
So yes, your response was incredibly rude.

Sorry, I didn't know that. Please forgive me. But, what does sugar gliders have to do with orphan kitty? Really sorry here. Just don't understand. If you want a thread about sugar gliders, why post in The Orphan Kitty thread? ?

Sorry, it wasn't you that knew the lady making sugar glider bags, it was Scarlett. If you scroll back like a good reader, you'll see the subject was brought up in regard to a kitten.

Clearly I shouldn't have assumed a person who made a thread about anything read the entire thread and all it's responses as they might have noticed the response by Scarlett regarding sugar glider bags etc. Even though having said that it's not as though ohwell has some psychic skills that I'm aware of enough to realise I refer to sugargliders as furbutts-as it stands I'm really not fussed about the reaction either way. Amused somewhat but not fussed-nice to meet you ohwell and I wish the best to the puss in question. >>>So many cats.... so few recipes! Even as a cat lover I've in the past consumed them-didn't know at the time what sort of meat I was eating at my neighbor's house and remembered that perhaps I didn't need to know what sort of meat was on the plate every time I ate there /shrug Tasty little buggers.
