I am wondering now that many of the facts about this murderer are coming out. I personally cannot stand that we have this as a holiday. Reading on what he and the thugs that Spanish did makes me sick. They are responsible for the destruction of thousands of years of human history and murder of many thousands of people.

I thought it was mostly the Italians who celebrated this holiday but I've always been a firm believer in the philosophy of "any excuse to throw a party."

I had a waist, once, but then I was eight years old.
Haven't seen it since.
But, ah, pretty girls help me remember, thank you, Babs.

Yes this is true because Columbus was Italian. It was the Spanish who funded and sent troops to the new world.

How about Amerigo Vespucci Day instead? Columbus Day should be a Dominican holiday.
As for the Spainards, we could have a Cortez Day where we celebrate militaristic domination and germ warfare! That should be a popular holiday for half of the US.

I didn't get off for Columbus Day, so it doesn't matter much to me I guess...

Just think about millions of tax dollars that were spend on parades, paid time off, etc.. So it does not matter if you or I get off. Scarce tax money is still being wasted on this genocidal freak.

Money spent is never wasted, it goes into someone else's pocket to be spent which goes into someone else's pocket to be spent. Money spent contributes to employment and puts food on people's table. Money spent actually creates more money because when it's spent it's taxed and when it is earned it is taxed. When it is loaned interest is paid on it.

BS the 100's of thousand of dollars spent could have been put to a lot better use. Fixing roads, school books and many other things that would help people. What about the millions paid for people to sit on their butt and watch tv when they could have been earning their money. It is a waist of good money to give people a paid day off for this it is undeserved. I know most businesses do not give this day off but many government agencies do.
I will admit if it were for someone who deserved the praise for accomplished something I would be more sympathetic.

Better spent and wasted are two different things. I may show a lack of efficiency in my use of money but I can't waste money. When I spend it I'm creating more.
