NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Passengers on a British Airways flight from New Delhi to London faced a 13-hour delay as the pilot felt he was too sleepy after a noisy night in a New Delhi hotel, newspapers reported on Monday. Angry passengers were offloaded from the plane early Sunday morning after the pilot refused to fly until he caught up with his sleep. "The crew hadn't had enough rest...the entire crew had a disturbed night," Radhika Raikhy, spokeswoman for BA, was quoted in the Hindustan Times as saying, adding the airline's safety rules do not allow its crew to operate in such conditions. The Times of India said the flight and cabin crew complained of not getting enough rest as their hotel was too noisy. story

They would have been a lot more pissed if the plane had crashed because the pilot fell asleep.

That's just silly. Planes don't need sleep. Get it in the air and let it fly. Planes need pilots less & less every year..

I reckon that's one hotel that won't be sending any more bills to British airways any time soon.

Despite grid's obvious sarcasm, a pilot can't just put the plane on auto-pilot and take a nap. If the aircraft should suffer a power failure or some other system failure the pilot must be ready and alert to take emergency actions. Your average person needs a few minutes to go from a deep sleep to a fully conscious and alert state. And when you're talking about a vehicle moving at 600mph, one minute translates into 10 miles of distance traveled. That's 52,800 feet. Most commercial airliners fly at or below 40,000 feet.
