Rockslide May Shut Interstate for Months RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 25) — A rockslide in western North Carolina near the Tennessee state line has closed Interstate 40, and officials say it could take several months to clear the debris. The state Department of Transportation on Sunday issued an emergency declaration. Initial estimates from engineers are that it could take several months to clean up the entire slide and restore traffic. DOT said a contractor is en route to begin clean up. The rockslide occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near mile marker 3 in Haywood County. The debris pile is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, reported WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tenn. A detour has been set up. Motorists traveling west to Tennessee should take I-40 West to I-240 West in Asheville to I-26 West. Follow I-26 West from Asheville to I-81 South in Tennessee, back to I-40. Eastbound motorists will follow the reverse directions. news.aol.com/article/rockslide-on-tennesee-north-carolina/735448

This seems to happen there every two or three years. Not sure why it can't be fixed permanently.

It happens because it is a road cut along the side of mountain. Shit happens.

That's why there's all those signs along it saying "landslide area" and warning to "watch for falling rocks."

Except last time it wasn't rock falling onto the road, it was the road falling off the side of the mountain.
Personally, I prefer taking 64/19/74 and going through the Ocoee and Nantahala river gorges. Takes about the same amount of time from here, and is a much more pleasant drive.

We missed the slide by about 10 hours on Saturday. We took the more scenic route home that daworm suggested. Much Much nicer drive. It took us less than 10 minutes more than the I - 75/40 option. Our stop to buy beer and subsequent bathroom stops may have affected our trip time going to Asheville.

If the state were serious about getting rid of the debris, they'd turn loose a pack of two-year-olds with plastic hammers. Smack, smack, smack. Poof!
Two-year-old kids can be pretty amazing.
