Who should use their cell phones for personal calls while working/performing their duties?

The key being that they are performing.

I can understand the occasional personal call from a family member to deal with time sensitive things. I can understand some amount of time on a personal call when a family member is experiencing an emergency or extreme need. Keep it under 2 minutes and get back to work. I often see a co-worker spend a major portion of the day stepping outside to talk on the cell phone. Another very annoying thing on the personal cell phone list is very loud crappy music used as a ringer. In an office without walls, hearing crappy cell phone ringers going off 8 to 10 times a day is very annoying.

I don't care who uses a cell phone and I don't care when they use it as long as it doesn't put me or my family at risk and I get the quick prompt service that every customer deserves.

I'm not supposed to use my cell phone at work, but I don't want to receive personal phone calls on my work phone. I keep my cell phone on vibrate. If I get a call I need to answer, I step away from my cubicle and answer it elsewhere.

I use my cell phone as a clock on the bus. It is set to vibrate. When I get finished driving, I can see who called or texted. If it's work, I will pull over and take the call. Sometimes the radio won't reach where a cell phone will, and although it's illegal to use a cell phone while driving a commercial vehicle, it is legal to use one to dispatch a commercial vehicle.

People who spend a great deal of time basically doing nothing... like Airplane pilots or Truck drivers should be allowed. I talk to my friend Scott an average of four hours every Sunday morning while he's driving. He uses a hands free set so it's more like talking to someone in the passenger seat. It helps to keep him awake and alert.

I talk to my friend Scott an average of four hours every Sunday morning while he's driving. Wow... That's a long time!!! " Research conducted into the relative danger of using a mobile handset and hands-free kit in the car has shown, however, that using hands-free kits is almost as dangerous as using a hand held phone.
"A person using a mobile phone when driving is four times more likely to have a crash that will result in hospital attendance. Sex, age group, or availability of a hands-free device do not influence the increased likelihood of a crash."
~~~~~
"Driver distraction - in which mobile phone use is one of the leading distractions - contributes to an estimated 23% of crashes. Research I have undertaken has shown that the use of a hand held mobile phone whilst driving increases the risk of crashing 4-fold whilst the use of hands-free mobile phone use whilst driving increases the risk 3.8-fold. Importantly, the risk of crashing is increased despite the age or sex of the driver."
~~~~~
"Driver simulator research has shown that there is a distinct difference between mobile phone use and passengers, with mobile phone use a greater distraction. This can be explained in part, by the fact that passengers moderate their conversation to take account of the driving tasks at-hand."

That's a New Zealand study. Everyone knows that Kiwis can't drive to begin with. There would be different results using superior American drivers.

Personally, I know I stay 'awake' on long drives much better if someone is talking to me and keeping the brain lurching along. 'Road hypnosis' is a very real danger.... especially when you've got a crappy radio and can't find a channel driving long distances. I think I get way more distracted leaning over pressing buttons trying to find something besides Country or Rap than chatting with a live person about life, the universe and everything.

NO ONE EVER Cells are evil, and when mine is left in the car, or anywhere but at my hip I love it. And I dont have a home phone anymore. Hi everyone its been a while. I want to start the dont you ever fucken get on the phone if you are trying to reverse. I have almost been hit by people backing up. Just wrong man since when do pedestrians not have the right of way. Plus when turning out of my subdivision why when I am turning right do people making U turns at the street give me dirty looks when I have the right of way. Almost got in a fight with some Jackass in a pickup who almost hit me. I stopped, waited for 15 seconds for him to get the point i had the right of way, then went the same speed as the car beside me to keep him behind me. All while this asshole was on his cell. Cussing me out. The U turn looks come to me all the time. It amazes me how much road rage happens over waiting 10 seconds for someone who has the right of way. I want to buy the biggest cheapest old car built like a tank just I dont care if people hit me, and always call the cops and insurance when it is their fault. Did that make any sense I think I rambled on a bit. What was the topic.
Ohh yeah NONE OF THE ABOVE though I would love my yearly trip to Hell-mart even longer by the cashier on the phone.
