While everyone was at work yesterday, our gate managed to come open. I don't know if the dogs managed to move the piece of asphalt that was holding it shut or if they had 'help'. The big old double gate is on a hill and over the decades, it has shifted and CAN 'fall' open if the block is moved from the down hill side where the dogs are. However it happened, when hubby came home from work early, the gates were open and the dogs were gone.
Now, my dogs have been in that fence almost their entire lives. Once in a blue moon, they manage to make a break for it when we are going through the gates, but they tend to just run up and down the street for a few minute 'stretching their legs' and come home within a half hour. While we did see dog prints in the mud out front, no dogs.
Bowser, the younger, smaller brown dog came home after 10 pm last night. Hubby had left the gate open (since the critters were already out) and he found Bowser laying on the back porch like nothing had happened last night. He closed the gate.
Jett has not returned. He is the larger, fluffier 13 year old Chow/Shepherd mix. I'm getting a bit worried about him. He looks 'scary' because he's black and sort of shaped like a wolf. For all of you who have 'met' Jett, you know he's the biggest lovey bear ever. He only wants to press up against you then fall on the ground and get his belly rubbed.
At first, we were angry because we THOUGHT our evil neighbor had let the dogs out and then called the pound. (At this point, I wouldn't put it past her.) I had resigned myself to calling the shelters to look for my dogs this morning. They were both wearing their tags so retrieving them would just be a logistical problem getting someone over there to pick them up during business hours. Now, with one home and one not, I'm worrying about the old guy. I don't want my big sweetie hit by a car! Nor do I want to think about him trying to find a place to stay warm all night. I'd rather have him in a shelter than out in the 'world' alone.
