I just went to pay for next semester of school. I have been using my visa card ever since I started going so I can pay it off during the semester. They no longer take visa. They do take mastercard, american express, and discover though. They say the visa is too expensive for them. Sounds like bs to me. The idiot at the desk told me I can write a check or use echecks this is even after I told her that I use visa so I can pay if off over the semester. I do not want to pay $1000 from my checking account. I need to be able to pay it off over the semester. What gets me is that every business that takes cards take visa but this state run shit hole of a school cannot. Sound like someone is being paid off. I will find a way to charge this even if I have to get a mastercard to do it.
Oh btw all around campus there are signs for a mastercard with the same company that processes the credit cards. I will NOT get this one.
Does anybody know how much it cost to process the different types of cards?
If you are wondering it is Dalton State and this is my last semester.

How odd. I've seen or shopped at places that won't take Discover, but not places that won't take Visa.
Your situation does, indeed, sound bogus.

It's widely known that American Express has the highest fees....it looks like MC worked a deal where their chief rival (Visa) was out.

the company they are using is who charges the processing fee to the merchant, in this case, the school. where i used to work, the owner would change CC machines sometimes as many as 3 times a year over the fees changing. if he found out he could save a penny, he would change processing facilities.
most places have gotten smart, and will only run the card if it is over a certain dollar amount. from what i was told, the fee for running the card is the same as long as it is over a set amount, but there are usually penalties if the card is run under a certain amount. say a 5 dollar purchase could cost them 45 cents to process, so they loose money.
it is total bullshit, and they did not want to get in to a head butting match over this. i fail to see why a community college like that would stop taking one of the most popular cards of all time. complete bullshit.

That's what I was thinking, Strick. In Dalton Visas truly are of no value.

Visa won't accept payouts from PokerStars either.
What is the world coming to?

I'm surprised colleges take any credit cards.. Did they ever charge you a "convenience fee" when you paid w/ the visa?

I wonder if the local governments know this, cause they sure do like to add that fee on. usa.visa.com/personal/using_visa/no-surcharge.html

I'm surprised colleges take any credit cards. Tennessee Tech took credit cards in the 70s. Chattanooga State took credit cards in the 80s. That was all in the previous century.

But often legal to give a cash discount... Very true but that would require the merchant to "discount" the price for cash payment, not increase it for use of a debit/credit card.

It's also illegal in to add a fee in most states. Only "illegal", a crime, in 10 states but is prohibited by all merchants regardless of state. Just not a "crime" in the other 40 states.

B&B gives Anti Pain in the Butt discounts. Regular customers who spend a lot of money, are thrilled that I have a huge selection, are always happy with what they get and never ask for discounts.... Get LOADS of free stuff and custom made rentals.
The ones who think they can bully me into breaking the rules just for them, get zero slack. I keep trying to figure out how to tack on an Attitude Adjustment charge.

It's also against the merchant agreements to require a minimum purchase.
Government agencies are exempt from the laws that prohibit charging fees for using credit cards, and they are, of course, exempt from merchant rules prohibiting fees.
It was at one point a federal law that prohibited surcharges for credit card usage. Section 167 of the federal Truth in Lending Act used to state: “No seller in any sales transaction may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means.”
However, that law expired and it was changed, and that section was rewritten to state: "(a) With respect to credit card which may be used for extensions of credit in sales transactions in which the seller is a person other than the card issuer, the card issuer may not, by contract or otherwise, prohibit any such seller from offering a discount to a cardholder to induce the cardholder to pay by cash, check, or similar means rather than use a credit card.
(b) With respect to any sales transaction, any discount from the regular price offered by the seller for the purpose of inducing payment by cash, checks, or other means not involving the use of an open-end credit plan or a credit card shall not constitute a finance charge as determined under section 106, if such discount is offered to all prospective buyers and its availability is disclosed clearly and conspicuously. "
