I'm looking for a couple of 45 rpm record adapters - the plastic hickeys about the size of a half dollar to fit inside the center hole of a 45 rpm record to reduce the size of the hole to about 1/8" to play on a standard record player - preferably close to Greater Metropolitan Red Bankistan or Hickstown.

You could probably make one faster than you could find one. How hard could it be?

FYI - I found it amusing to notice that Whoopi Goldberg was wearing a silver adaptor on a chain as a necklace. I - being old - recognized that shape immediately.... then wondered if young'uns would know what it was.

Yes, if you count clicks, pops and hiss as naughty bits.

Yes, if you count clicks, pops and hiss as naughty bits. No. I call that nostalgia to have a slight distortion in the sound.

Hubby and I found this fun road side 'flea market' on the way home from Huntsville. We've driven by it a hundred times, but it was always tarped over. We actually passed by it last Saturday and peeked in. They had boxes on the ground full of vinyl LPs. Sadly, all the jackets were shot, but the actual records all seemed to be in good shape. To bad any possible classic rock was gone. There was almost nothing in the box but old Country, some religious and some John Denver type 'easy listening'.
Hubby did manage to find a copy of "The First Family" - a rare comedy album spoofing the Kennedy family and administration that was released just before the shooting. It pulled due to people considering it to be in poor taste. Actually, it's pretty funny, they just had very bad timing. Now, we just have to find a record player....

I have a USB turntable for just that sort of thing. Not the best in the world, but considering the material I've been ripping from vinyl*, quite adequate.
* Or more accurately, vinyl and shellac, as a lot of what I've ripped have been 78's.

speaking of record stores...Yall got any gems/hidden secret ones?! "I want the RECORD!" You talking about the 1st album by Fear called "The Record?" I've had a few copies but not now. I do have a pair of surf/garage acetates recorded at Bell Studio in 1966 by a band called the Hi Fives. There is nothing about them online and nothing on popsike where you can look at the value of rare records. The recorded a garage version of "Run for your Life, Little Girl" by The Beatles and a cool Surf version of Caravan by Duke Ellington. I sold my copy of the Koro ep, they were a Knoxville band from the early 80s. Mine brought a thousand dollars. You can look them up on popsike, they all bring that kind of money. www.popsike.com/

Well, yes and no. Mine has more gain on one channel than the other, which I adjust out in the mixer, and the auto-return feature triggered far too early, so I had to take it apart and disable that (most records have an end groove so you don't really need auto-return, but for the ones that don't I have to be careful to catch the needle before it hits the label). But it does have 33 1/3, 45 and 78 RPM settings, so I can get everything but my Edison disks and the really oddball 16-ish RPM records that were out for a while (and which I don't own any of). Since almost all of my vinyl/shellac is heavily used, I'm not 100% concerned about fidelity. I do rip at max rate. I use Audacity's noise filter and de-click features, but at not very aggressive settings. Especially not the noise filter, as too aggressive and it sounds like you stuck a mike in a milk jug to record. But a little does a good job of removing the most obnoxious of the needle hiss. I've also found that my best vinyl (some I bought new and only ever played to make cassettes of) sounds very good with no processing at all, so most of my cleanup is not due to the turntable but instead to the poor sources I'm working with (mainly albums myself and my wife had as teens that aren't available on CD, and the old 78's which were never kept well).
If you have a good turntable, your best bet for the least cash is to hook it to your receiver, then run the line out of the receiver into your soundcard and record that way. You can do this with a laptop at the stereo. I got the USB model because a) it was cheap, b) my stereo is nowhere near my computer, c) hooking the cable into my receiver is a pain for using the laptop, d) it was just the sort of geeky thing a guy like me goes "Ooo, shiny!" for and buys whether they need it or not, and e) it works in Linux (and Mac OSX if you are so inclined).
I've been meaning to experiment with the 78's to see if playing them back at 33 1/3 RPM, then speeding them up in software, will help the sound quality. I would think that the pops would be reduced, as the needle wouldn't be traveling so fast, and thus wouldn't bounce as much, but I haven't tried it out yet.

worm: Thanks! That's what I call an Answer(rare in this day & age)!
I have two average turntables,a Technics & a Pioneer but with good cartridges(Stanton's). I was leaning toward the USB type for my GF,that way I can use it (cool that it's Linux compatible...I'm just now starting on Ubuntu)!
Pre-amps are so *#@*%$@ (!) unless you're willing to pay for a good one.

Worm knows his stuff. Which is good because trying to read that post was some what like me trying to read Latin. Some of the words seem familiar, but I have no idea what it said.

I think I paid $45 at geeks.com. It's this one only with a cover. Geeks doesn't have anymore, and no one else seems to have them cheap right now. The company makes some better models, and there are other brands. Look around, you may find someone else selling them cheap.
