They won't let you put another restaurant in the old Shoney's building? That's just crazy! Actually, I believe the real reason is I became such a nuisance at City Hall, trying to get into the old KFC/Donut Palace/Mr. T's building and balked at everyone and everything I could that tried to stand in my way, until they refused to let me hire my own electrician to make the repairs after I pulled city and county permits mind you, - then they gave me a list of electricians they wanted to do the job. So when I applied for a permits and licenses for the Shoney's, I was immediately denied. Then they said the Shoney's building was zone to close to a church for beer and liquor sales. But if I remember, Los Dorado's sold beer! So do the zoning laws change based on who the applicant is? It is my firm belief that the RB council meets privately at the Southern prior to the open council meetings to discuss and vote on the agenda before public meetings. I am sure if the Southern (which received a 73 on their last health inspection, my lowest ever when I had a bar in Chattanooga was 94!) wanted that building, they would have it in a heartbeat.

I know from personal experience that Red Bank does not issue electrical permits, as their inspector is not qualified as an electrical inspector. Everything else they do and he is. For electrical they defer to Hamilton County. As far as that location having been a failed restaurant too many times, what's the excuse behind Red Rock? Yoda, thanks for reminding me about Greg Jones, you're right he did come through for permit holders, is the rest of the council keeping him quiet?
Since Dayton Blvd. is a State road, shouldn't the state have something to say about this ill-conceived idea?

Not that I can tell. He seems quieter than the rest, but that might just be because he's thinking things through more than just running his mouth. If I'm right, that's a good thing. It's rather like, "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
> Since Dayton Blvd. is a State road, shouldn't the state have something to say about this ill-conceived idea?
Good point, but I'm not so sure that Dayton Boulevard is the target. According to the WRCB article,
"Dorsey says the main goal will be to alert drivers of their surroundings. The city plans to install them before dangerous curves, such as the one on Appian way, and before stop signs that are often not seen."
That galls me, because the city has already roughened up Appian Way where I think the sentence above refers to. I drive that part of the road often enough that I find the rough road very annoying. I can't say that the roughness made the road any safer for me because I've traveled that road at 30 mph for years with nary a problem.
As I wrote to the commissioners, go after the speeders; not after me.
I guess I'll have to attend Tuesday evening's meeting just to give them the hairy eyeball (whatever that expression means).
*edited to add:
I have AHLOT of faith in Dorsey. He's the best thing that ever happened to Greater Metropolitan Red Bank, so I'll do my best to attend with an open mind and ears. Appian Way, I don't buy. "Hidden" stop signs are another story. The stop sign ON Appian at Delashmitt is yet another story. Almost nobody stops there unless there is cross traffic on Delashmitt, and that stop sign is hardly hidden although I can pretty reasonably guess at what the argument about that sign might be. If I'm right, then I consider the argument to be bogus and can justify my opinion.

Ya know, I would love to see a small tavern go into the old Red Bank Hardware Store. I'm sure it is far enough away from both RBBaptist and RBMethodist to be able to get a beer license. I think just half of that building would work.

Yoda, I'm with you regarding how Appian Way has been fouled up, its atrocious! We've lived here over 30 years and I can't recall any accidents from loss of control there. To me its as bad as what Chattanooga did to Norcross Rd with the chip seal.
Unfortunately I'm scheduled out of town Tuesday, or I'd be there too.

It [Appian] is worse because Norcross is now smoothly paved - at least the part I drive on is.

So I did take my hairy eyeball to the commission meeting. They were mostly well-behaved (which is probably more than they can say about me).
I can't scribble very fast and still read my hieroglyphics, so if I have errors in the following, I trust that I will be corrected (not that our fearless leaders would ever guess who I really am).
Massa Dorsey who has been with the city since June, 2005 made it a point to address some concerns, so here's what I wrote down.
The city does not have a list of "its own contractors".
The city has not denied putting in a restaurant.
Dayton Boulevard north of Signal Mountain road is no longer a state highway, so Red Bank has to maintain it.
There will be no rumble strips on Dayton Boulevard.
The rumble strips are not the nasty things I thought they were. They're much smaller.
(As pointed out a few message above) the city does not do electrical codes - the county does.
The location at the old Shoney's could have a liquor license.
The "scoring" on Appian Way was requested by that street's residents and police because we could count on weekly wrecks whenever it rained resulting in a bunch of mailboxes being run over. (At the point Dorsey made this statement, I noticed one of the local constabulary nodding his head up and down which I take to mean he had to deal with some of the wrecks. Well, that or he was trying to stay awake.) Dorsey did say something to the effect that he was sorry that everyone has to put up with a bumpy road, but it was a safety issue. OK. I don't like it, but I'll accept what he said.
So there.
Moving right along.
I'm curious about the $24,000+ being spent on "tactical weapons" for the police force. Any chance they really are going to install .50 cals at the traffic lights?
Speaking of traffic light cameras, there should be some discussion at the next commission meeting (01/05/2010) about what to do with the trillions of dollars collected from all those innocent parties. I'll suggest more .50 cals, of course, plus lots and lots of ammo.)

LOL! One would think they read this forum.
Oh, and just FYI - Hubby saw people working on the old Shoney's building Monday. Painting and what not. Either something new is going in or the owners are trying to spruce it up to entice new occupants.
Personally, I don't know. I've been to busy to get my nose out of the shop for more than quick trips to the Post Office and to drop off goodies for the Fire & Police. Although I did notice that MY place sure could use a coat of paint this spring. If I can wedge that in between re-doing all the Beauty & the Beast costumes for Abba's House (Central Baptist, Hixson) and making a few dozen new 'Ozian' & 'Munchkin' outfits for Catoosa County High. Sure wish I had a better place to STORE all this stuff!

> Thanks Yoda! You're welcome, but please don't labor under the misconception that I've reported everything that went on. For instance, there's a green-way thing which inspired a citizen comment, and the year-end audit (things are looking good). Also, I'm feeling a little guilty about heaping praise on Dorsey but failing to mention other people who are doing tough jobs such as Wayne Hamill (take a look at all the stuff he's responsible for!), and I feel sure that I see barely the tip of the iceberg. Here's a wave of the hand to the fire and police departments too. In spite of all the grousing about RB, we are lucky to have a really good crop of people working for the city and with the city, both as employees and as volunteers. The city will hold a Christmas luncheon deal soon, and if in fact someone from the city administration does read this forum, I hope he or she will pass along my thanks to all the employees and people I don't see or recognize but for whom I'm very grateful. I'm glad to live in Greater Metropolitan Red Bankistan. The Christmas decorations along Dayton Boulevard look good, too. They didn't appear there by magic. Someone had to expend energy to make them happen.
