WRCB reports that Red Bank is considering putting in rumble strips to encourage people to quit speeding. I don't speed. But now I'll have to endure the rumble strips because of those who do? Boo.

Well..let's examine this.....last week these same said commisssioners were lamenting, after cruising Dayton Blvd, the fact that there are 85 or so vacant commercial buildings. What's the first they do address that issue---------RUMBLE STRIPS!!!!! I mean talk about NOT GETTING IT!!! And I live here--I want the town to succeed, but I can't imagine anything being more typical of how CLUELESS THEY ARE,then these back to back announcements.

Why not just set up a couple of snipers on the Waffle House roof, Signal Mountain Blvd. at Dayton Blvd.? How serious are they about stopping the speeding and red-light running?

No, you have to endure the rumble strips because of your idiot city commissioners. The speeders aren't putting in the rumble strips.

They won't put in rumble strips. If people quit speeding, there goes a major source of their income.

The problem with Redbankistan is that 'Good old boy' / 'Old Guard' / 'Grandfathered in' attitude. They only want 'certain types' of businesses in their little community. I haven't quite figured out what those types are, but it appears that you have to know the secret handshake to get such privileged information.

What do rumble strips have to do with speeding? I don't even particularly slow down for speed bumps. The math is pretty simple Rumble strips COST money Speeding tickets MAKE money So they just need to write more tickets. Yeah, mostly churches, deadbeat businesses that generate no tax revenue. Another reason to write more tickets and not waste money on things like rumble strips and that fancy interceptor car they have. BTW - I don't drive there any more than I absolutely have to and have no plans to

Out of curiosity, what kind of businesses do y'all think would work?

Mostly radar detector sales, and certainly nothing that you would be in a rush to get there.

Personally, I wanted to do a little light manufacturing.
I HAVE a thriving business in Red Bank. I also have some underdeveloped property with a house that is almost 100 years old. That house is not worth the money it would take to put in things like Central heat & air, re plumb and rewire the house to bring it up to 'livable conditions' for a modern family, so it is only being used for storage. I wanted to tear that down and put up a nice big duel purpose warehouse that would store a greater selection of costumes and props for theatrical use. This would not only benefit my business, but also every school, church and theatrical group in 200 miles. It would also house a workshop for making large vaccu formed plastic items out of heavy duty plastics that are NOT currently available on the market. We wanted to make items like Roman Soldier / Knight breast plates and shields out of heavy plastics that would withstand rental. Possibly even 3-D wall units to be used for sets. Many, many theatrical items could have been produced at low cost for multiple uses.
However, since we have been involved with evil, heathen (possibly Satanic and Dangerous!) activities like running a Charity Haunted house to raise money for Breast Cancer survivors during October, aka Breast Cancer awareness month, we got blocked at every turn. Not only that, but some people think that warehouses are ugly. That rotting down, empty house is SO MUCH MORE attractive!
No. I'm not bitter. Not at all.

I have been wanting to jump on this subject about Red Bank for some time now, so here goes.
I tried to open a business in Red Bank some years ago. Much to my dismay, it's all in who you know, whether you can suceed there or not. Like Scarlett said, if your not grandfathered in, or kissing ass with the politics, good ol' boy --- your shit out of luck!
I rented a building from a council person, who insisted I buy a certain paint, from a certain relative that owns a certain paint store. I would pay her for my lights, never saw a bill, but EPB inspected the property for me and found I am paying for security lighting for other proeprties off my meter. Then after refurbishing the building, the council person disapproved of the business and forced me out. She wanted a teahouse, not what I wanted!
I then looked at another building, but was told by the city, I would have to use thier contractors to bring the building to code. I can't hire my own licsensed electrician? They put a condemd sign up some 3 years ago, but the building still stands today.
I looked at one last building, but the city rejected me putting a resturant back in the old Shoneys after the mexican place failed. Why? They said they would not approve another restaurant there again, too many failed! So I failed before I even got a foot in the door!
So, I lost a catering business, a fish & chicken business (to replace LJS and Capt. D's), and a steakhouse business to the Red Bankistan Communistic City Council of Czars.
Thanks Red Bank! 83 vacant business, geeze, wonder why?

This is what I've been saying for years. EVERY politician, regardless of party affilication or office, needs to be voted out at the very first opportunity. Maybe then they will see that it's government of the people, by the people, and especially FOR the people not for themselves and their good ole boys(girls).

Sure thing, Zippy. I really, really want a job that pays $200 / year, requires a lot of one's time, and no matter what you do, almost everyone will complain.
Now, about that tattoo on my forehead...

They won't let you put another restaurant in the old Shoney's building? That's just crazy! I tried to buy that building right after Shoney's went out. However, it was then a "Lock, Stock & Barrel" deal. They would NOT sell the fully equipped building for less than $250K. There was only one other serious buyer there who wanted the equipment. We offered $200K for the building and the other buyer offered $90K for all the equipment. The auctioneer refused to split the lot and suggested that WE buy it for the $250K minimum then strike a deal with the other guy to get $90K back. We didn't know that guy and had no way to check his credentials. No Sale that day!
(Not Red Bank's fault!)
I have no idea how future deals on that building went down... but I know it was empty for years. And besides, the old Capt'n D's is now Serendipity. That's a restaurant - sort of. And that bar up near Signal Mountain Blvd. changes hands all the time. I can't imagine WHY the council would refuse you on such a stupid premise as "To many others have failed."

RUMBLE STRIPS? !! It is well past time that Glasscock goes away. I cannot imagine why he was able to go back as Mayor after having served 30-40 years ago. Could nobody remember his incompetence? Jeno is there as help to him, Millard is a total embarrassment, Pierce and the other guy? Why? Folks, lets send them all home!

"Not so fast."TM
Greg Jones saved our bacon when Glasscock tried to push through a vote to "ban guns from parks". That gave the rest of the commissioners time to reconsider their votes.
> Folks, lets send them all home!
To be replaced by whom?
Stray doesn't live in Red Bank, does he?

Yes! We could get some businesses in those empty store fronts that might actually make money. Like Misty's catering, so type of entertainment - just anything - the old drive in, a pool hall, something! Wonder if I could use my run down old house as a 'residence' enough to say I still live there?

Since you are the property owner I'm guessing that would be more legitimate than renting a bedroom in someone's house.

Careful nominating me. I randomly go out of state to work for extended periods of time.
Of course, I'd not be saying "no" to new businesses so long as there were not zoning restrictions already in place without a variance being requested. I'd probably be way resistant to more churches though.

Are you *really* sure you want me for mayor?
You do know, don't you, that I'd replace the flash bulbs on the traffic cameras with .50 cals.
Hey, I'm serious about stopping miscreants.
Besides, I don't want to be mayor. I want to be king, but not Burger King.

I really am!! quoth the happy Chattanooga residentAnd when I think of Vice I think of Ms Scarlett Stray would make a very entertaining C. O. P. too! I personally think we have no chance of getting decent representation or efficient operation out of governments, so we may as well go for entertainment! We just all need to register our voting address at Ms Scarlett's house. As long as none of us are called Sanchez or Rico they'll never even wonder about so many living there.
