Bob: be prepared to hear, "...we don't do that..." At which point you say, "...yes you do. May I speak with your supervisor, please?"
I am amazed at the lack of "continuing education" on the part of these call-center operators.

Called 311, rolled it out to the street. I ran some errands and when I got back it was gone so I called the city and canceled... [shrug]

I rarely have to call 311...my neighborhood cleans up after itself. And you probably don't even need to put it outside

Well, if someone were to be foolish enough to try and "clean" the inside of my house, there would be a different kind of disposal issue created.

Try 385 degrees, 25 minutes per pound.
Well, that and a little barbecue sauce.
Oh, and you can donate the bones to the radiologic technology program at ChSCC.

Frowns, but allows exceptions in certain circumstances.

if you do get a new water heater, go to EPB's web site and there's a form on there to fill out to get a $50 credit on your bill.

Gotta love people who clean up the Kurby's. (I have done that!) The City's 311 rules mean that the trash normally doesn't sit there for more than a couple of days... so dumpster diving junkers have to grab stuff quickly!

I put an old day bed (cheap aluminum one) out on the curb a few years back. Was vacuuming the carpet and realized I had left the decorative caps on the TV, so I walked them out to the curb. The day bed was GONE---less than 5 minutes.

Junkers grab everything except for REAL trash.
I got in trouble with the city over some junk I cleaned out of the basement. An old mattress, a dryer and a BBQ grill were not wanted by anyone. I put the stuff to the street and called 311. (A chair and other things were grabbed by scavengers.) The city didn't pick up the other stuff because we a few bits of scrap lumber in the pile. They don't pick up 'building supplies'. We removed those. Called again. That time, they didn't pick it up because the pile was under a power pole guide wire. We got SITED for having trash on the street! Called AGAIN. The woman on the phone said "You use this service a lot!" I said "No I don't. This the THIRD TIME I have had to call over ONE Dryer, ONE Mattress and ONE BBQ grill." JoeDog was finally kind enough to come write the aforementioned number on the Dryer. It finally went away.

funny I asked for that number and she didn't know what I was talking about. Every time you make a call to 311 a service request (SR#) is generated. They MUST offer to give you that number at the end of the call. That is your proof that you have called the city's 311 service. If they do not offer the "service request" number at the end of the call ask to speak with someone else before you end the call.

She said, "Oh you don't need that, your last name will do".
guess I'm glad somebody else got it.

Don't forget Chattanooga Freecycle -- good for things that are hard to recycle but still usable. The objective is to keep things out of landfills. Certain things won't be accepted, such as the aforementioned bones... but many are and you'd be amazed at what people get all excited about. My most recent contributions were a plastic dispenser for plastic bags and a dozen purple file folders. Be prepared for the first responder to diddle and delay in making arrangements to get the item. Just relist and someone will more than likely want it. I got a cat tree for Precious last week through Freecycle.
