This is on behalf of my son, who works retail. He's trying to get more hours (as many as a high school student can possibly get), and theoretically, he should be able to. This is because employees constantly quit. He's been there for 2 months and is now known as "the old-timer."
But, no, management will instantly hire someone to replace the departee.
That's not the mystery. The mystery is their choice of new-hires.
The lastest addition to the crew:
She's 16, dropped out of high school in the 10th grade. Married, allegedly.
7 months pregnant with her second child. Feels "sick" half the day and "starving" the other half; spends most of her time in the back room "resting" and gets huffy if a co-worker (guess who) is too busy to escort her to the bus.
On any given day, the store has 2-3 dozen applications. This is who they hire.
Can anyone explain this, from a management perspective?
It's a serious question.
Thanks... /r

Most people will not hire a soon to be bed ridden person. They can't TELL you they can't hire you because you're preggers, but they don't have to so..........
As far as the new hires go, this place is obviously desperate for hires with their high turn over rate and the high turn over rate seems to be because the place is being run by a monkey F(*^ing a football. No manager in their right mind would hire someone that is guaranteed to be out of their job in 2 months unless they were that damn good that they wanted them on staff, which the dropout baby making machine certainly does not possess this type of resume.
In short, any more time spent at this job is time wasted by your son. If the DM's are not coming in and cleaning house from the high turnover then they don't care either and there is no way anything is gonna change.
I've been everything from a 3rd key to a store manager to a DM to an owner over the last 12 yrs and places like that only end up closed eventually from bad management.

IIRC, according to child labor laws, minors cannot work more than 20 hours per week during the school year and cannot work past 10pm on a school night. So your son's employer may not have the option to give your son more hours.

Yeah, those child labor laws...last year he was working close to twice the legal limit. I let him because a)he's bigger & smarter than me, b) he was keeping the grades up, c) it wasn't a long-term gig and the boss knew it and d) he was in hog heaven making all that money. He asked his manager today about hiring Lady Madonna -- her explanation was that none of the other applicants could work the day shift. Whatevah. 10pm, eh? The place supposedly closes at 9:30, but they take their sweet time shutting down. Then we have to follow his manager to the bank when she makes the night deposit. Very high-tech security... Not past his bedtime, since he's an incurable night owl, but it's way the hell past mine! He is actively looking for an alternate venue, so we'll see.

"She" hired the "qualified" woman.
Sounds like the good-ol'-gals' network.
