My hard drive crashed with spectacular sound and light!
I am up and running after taking my laptop to A & F Computers in Soddy-Daisy. They installed a hard drive (After backing everything up) and had me good to go (Duke is upset about that, I am sure, which makes me even giddier) in less than 24 hours. They did so for an extremely reasonable fee. So reasonable, I feel guilty!
I would highly recommend them for any computer repairs and service.
They are located at 8794 Dayton Pike (Near the Ice Cream place) behind the Yellow house. Their number is 423-332-4547.

Let us bow our heads,
Recently my faithful companion of nearly 10 years passed onto the great beyond. The wonderful folks at A & F gave me the bad news today that the old girl died of motherboard failure. They checked and her brains (aka hard drive) and it was still in wonderful shape and still had lots of life left in her.
They sold me a external case at a VERY reasonable price so I could move some of the files I desperately needed. With what I have back at my finger tips now, my "new" laptop has a slight feel of the old girl I loved all those years.
I have thought of many names for the new little thing that used to be my desktop. I am really liking the name Zoe since it has an infinity logo on it.

Thanks for the info PM. I have been looking for someone to take a look at my desktop and see what is wrong. They are close.

Cool, Nana! They are the ones that turned me on to "AVG Free" after a virus crashed another computer. Even with McAfee installed it had 71 viruses that snuck past. I haven't had a scintilla of a virus (Except for the flu I got last year) since installing AVG Free.

Installed AVG Free yesterday after reading this. So far, so good. My PC seems to be running faster (or dragging less) now. Avast was OK, but like too many AV software packages, it's intrusive, making loud announcements about updates and other routine things. I'm not getting that with AVG, which makes it worthwhile just for that.

avg is good, I personally prefer avast. I purchased the "pro" version which gives full firewall protection for three computers for I think $40 a year. And they're not real picky about if you put it on a couple more than three.

I don't know what Avast was doing to my computer, but previous to this, if I did a Disk Cleanup, I could settle down with War & Peace, Gone With the Wind and Ulysses while waiting for it to complete. Now it's done in two minutes. I was steeling myself to start PC-shopping again (my workhorse is over 5 years old). Now I can relax. Great feeling!

Now I use the paid avast, not the free one. but don't see a problem with it.

Fast does not always equal good.
I've found that Avast will catch stuff that AVG will miss on the machine with both loaded. Especially on those pesky traveling viruses you pick up on weak sites.
