anyone have an old double element double thermostat electric water heater laying around in a garage or basement that you would not mind letting someone scavenge a few parts from the thing? i had a wire short out on the inside of mine and it burned up the thermostat. i think it got both of them actually. i was wondering if anyone had a donor unit that i could get off an old water heater to make sure its going to work.
i don't want to shit away 35bucks on both thermostats if that isn't the problem.
i think it is about dead but i don't want to waste the money on new parts if it wont fix the problem. know what i mean?

Move the element wires from the normal contacts on the thermostat to the 'line' side. Does the element heat? Yes = thermostat bad. No- bad element or no line power.
