Big Ice Storm Was 50 Years Ago This Month by John Shearer posted March 6, 2010 Fifty years ago this month, an unusual event – the 1960 ice storm – resulted in some unique memories as well for Chattanoogans. People living on Lookout and Signal mountains at the time have not likely forgotten the storm, and current residents who experienced the bad wintry conditions of 2010 can certainly better understand why it was so unforgettable. With power outages, damaged trees and homes, and blocked roads, the 1960 storm was certainly a major hassle throughout Chattanooga. In contrast to most modern winter storms, this ice blizzard came in almost unexpectedly, even though the winter of 1959-60 had already seen plenty of snowfall, and five more inches would fall a week after the storm. I remember that ice storm and I think my dad has an old photo album with a bunch of pictures taken up on Signal Mtn the next day with ice everywhere. Ice encrusted everything in a thick, thick layer.

There was another ice storm that I remember as a kid. It had to be closer to be after 1967 because I was living in the house we moved into that year.

I think there was one in 66-67ish. Not as bad as this one. I was just a kid and was snowed in at the cousin's house while visiting on Lookout Mountain at Covenant College.
Not sure exactly the year, but I am sure it was before I was introduced to marijuana/beer and women, in any real sense.
Had to be 66-67, then.
Pretty cool for a kid from Florida.
The snow, I mean.

Sorry. Wasn't born until '61.
But I used to have a lot of new paper clippings from the huge flood of '73 when Chatt State and Eastgate mall were both under water.

The earliest winter storm I remember was '69 when Seattle had two feet of snow. That was especially memorable as I was probably only around three feet tall.

I remember a 7-10" snowfall on my birthday, in early April. I think it was in about '73 to '75 or so. I'm really fuzzy on when things happens when I was a kid, as I really didn't care how old I was then.

I remember the ice storm in 1960 quite well. That Wednesday was the beginning of Spring Break, with half-day school. I caught a ride as far as the foot of Lookout with an older guy who had a car, and caught up with my stepfather for the rest of the trip. We got out of the car halfway up, stopped by snarled traffic, and heard an ungodly racket of breaking and falling trees.
Like most of the other mountain dwellers, we bailed out the next day and spent a week in a downtown motel. Sure was pretty looking from the valley up at the icy mountain.
I have no pictures that can be uploaded, but I do have a copy of the newspaper the next day, showing a helicopter-view of Lookout, with trees sheared as though a big scythe had cleared them out.

Probably. But don't tell Al Gore. Deal, as long as I can go ahead and schedule it to my days off!
