One of my students told me about A Day Without Shoes. "Through everyday encounters with domestic poverty, we are reminded to appreciate having food and shelter, but most of us all but forget about our feet. Food, shelter, AND shoes facilitate life’s fundamentals. Imagine a life without shoes; constantly aware of the ground in front of you, suffering regular cuts and scrapes, tending to infection after each walk, and enduring not only terrain, but heat and cold. The problem is large, but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and practicing basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil. By imagining a life barefoot, we can all contribute to the awareness of these conditions. On April 8th, communities, campuses, organizations, and individuals are banding together to walk barefoot for One Day Without Shoes." according to www.onedaywithoutshoes.com/learn.php

I for some reason never suspected you, Duke, as a frequent visitor to "weddings are fun" [grin]

I totally understand the concept behind this project... However, I can't wait for the weather to be warm enough to go barefoot all the time.

Wearing shoes causes atrophy of the supporting muscles of the feet, fungal infections, more wear on the ankle, knees and hips and plantar fascitis.

I'd just like to use the day as an excuse. I don't need no stinking shoes!

Shoes are the biggest downside I've found in having a job.

downside The less you wear shoes, the less you need shoes. But then I have the luxury of choosing. This does sound like a good cause. There are serious problems with foot care and the homeless. There is a monk down at the Community Kitchen that helps the homeless and their feet as his ministry. (I'm trying really hard not to make the obvious pun...) I'm glad he is there for those that need him.

Shoes are the biggest downside I've found in having a job. Not having money would be bad too...

There used to be a group here we called barefooters. They voluntarily shunned shoes year 'round.

I worked with an attorney who had a foot fetish. He would have loved a whole day without shoes. He could look at a woman's foot and tell what size shoe she wear. He was like the Rain Man of feet www.zappos.com/map/
