Ok. You guys know I just changed my ISP. Before we did that, my husband set up a new GMail address. My older son forwarded all his mail from our old ISP based mail to the GMail account. Hubby had the account set on "Stay Signed In"
Yep. You guessed it. The ISP changed and he got logged out of his Gmail account. Now he can't remember the password - even though it's written on a piece of paper next to the computer. After much mucking around, I discovered the GMail passwords have to be 8 characters long and what he has written down is only 7.
There is no "Security Question" to prove we are the owners of that account. It only sends Password Change request forms to the Dead ISP. The "I can't log in" form to fill out does not have a box for "I changed my ISP". There is no way to explain your problem to the massive monster that is Gmail. It only sends you to the forums to search for your own answers as provided by other users.
Guess what? YOU CAN'T POST A NEW QUESTION IF YOU CAN'T LOG IN! Why did I ever let #1 son talk hubby into this?

Workspace email from GoDaddy is 10 bucks a year with your own domain name.
It's far better then anything you can get for free. The best part, if you ever change your isp again, you won't need to change emails...

Unless of course if you get tired of paying GoDaddy...

Personally, I'm on Mail.com. Never had a problem with it. Hubby wouldn't have nearly as many computer problems if he would just PICK ONE Password and use it on everything instead of making up new ones every time he sits down.

Soooo... It's been more than 24 hours.. Was your hubby able to get to the security question page in order to reset his password?

No, we went to Frolicon and forgot all about it. He started a New Gmail and is now wondering how to forward all his mail from our Americainter.net account to the new one. Considering that I just closed the other account, I would say the answer is moot because there won't BE any more mail from that account to be forwarded.

You're right. That's why I never use my ISP's email account. I don't want to be locked into the ISP just to keep my email account...
Well.. If he liked his other gmail account name better, the security questions should be up now...

I've still got mail from 04 in my gmail account. I love it, (Even though I never login to it, I just have it fowarded into my exchange server account).
Would hate to give it up.
Besides where else would I get a easy to remember email consisting of my user name @ domain anymore, it would have to be dabone32545832@whatever.com
Later, dabone

Hubby finally remembered his password! Yay!
(Actually, #1 son who set up the account remembered it.)

No. We never did find the security question. #1 Son set up the account for hubby. Son selected the password so it was NOT one of hubby's normal words. We normally use an unusual word plus some numbers. The word #1 Son chose could have been singular or plural. I don't remember now which it was, but hubby wrote it down the other way. With or without the S makes a big difference.

No. We never did find the security question. Weird.. I've used it before.. You have to click on "Can't access your account?" "I forgot my password" and then go to the: "password recovery page" and the security questions are there. 'eh... I guess it doesn't matter now.

Apparently, when #1 son set up the account for Hubby, he did not assign a Security Question. We had HIM set up the account because we needed all the Email from our prior ISP mail to be forwarded to the new GMail. I only recently found out that the real reason Gmail kept refusing my attempts to get the password revolved around the fact that #1 son assigned HIS account as the "Go To" default in case of problems. *palm to forehead* THAT was why I could not convince the Gmail people that I actually owned the account. Absolutely none of the information that I was giving them about US matched the info used to set up the account!
Moral of the story boys and girls? If you have an outside Geek set up your accounts to do something fancy - as SOON as it screws up, call the Geek. Don't try to fix it yourself. You will have no idea what info the Geek put on the account.

So, the title of this thread is incorrect - gmail does not suck, the way it was set up sucked!

Yep. It's working fine now. Never let it be said that I don't admit being wrong from time to time.
(I'm just not nearly as LOUD about it when I admit my mistakes.)
