Found this guy (I presume) gathering nesting supplies in my back yard. Would like to post his pic on my website but need to ID him. Can you help? I'm tempted to call him a Mardi Gras bird since his feathers are edged in yellow/gold, and he has green and purple feathers around his neck :-)

Yup starling, EUROPEAN starling as in INVASIVE species.
*shudder*
The starling is one of three species of birds its legal to kill indiscriminately.
If you feed him, he'll bring a few hundred of his friends.

Oh, I have heard the story about the introduction of the European Starling to this country. A Shakespeare fanatic wanted all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare's plays to be represented in this country, so he imported a number of non-native species. The starling thrived and became a pest. Don't blame Shakespeare.

Invasive is right. After shooting the picture I followed where he was going, and he's building a nest in my soffit! There's a hole where some water damage is, and they're building in there. After work rtomorrow, I'm going to serve them with an eviction notice then board up the opening.

European StarlingAll of the 200 million European Starlings found in North America today are descendants of approximately 100 birds released in New York City's Central Park in the early 1890s by an industrialist who wanted to establish, in the U.S., all birds mentioned in the works of Shakespeare. House SparrowHouse Sparrow: Native to Britain, northern Scandinavia, and northern Siberia to northern Africa, Arabia, India, and Burma. Introduced and established worldwide except in Antarctica; resident throughout temperate North America. Preferred habitats include cities, towns, and agricultural areas. Rock PigeonRock Pigeon: Native to Eurasia; introduced and established in most of North America from central Canada southward. Found in agricultural lands, open shrub, and urban areas. source www.whatbird.com

That sounds like a good plan. Feed 'em, invite Joedog over, and kill a ton of 'em The starling is one of three species of birds its legal to kill indiscriminately. If you feed him, he'll bring a few hundred of his friends.
