No new doggie for me. McKamey is closed for adoptions today. The lady at the door said "We've had some 'sickness'. We don't want to adopt out anymore dogs until the vet has checked them all out. Try calling on Tuesday or Wednesday." For those of you who ever met him, my big old lovey bear Jett had to be put to sleep last Monday. He was 15 years old. Apparently, he came down with "Bloat" or "Twisted Stomach." The vet said that the surgery to fix that is very difficult even on younger dogs. He didn't think Jett would pull through, so we sent him on to doggie heaven quietly and painlessly. Now, my last remaining outdoor dog, Bowser is getting rather lonely. I managed to get out of work at 6 last Wednesday to go over and look for a big black dog. I know those are always the last to be adopted, so I was specifically looking for one slated for death. As I did not have Bowser with me that day, I didn't select one. I'm hoping that ALL the dogs I saw that day will be OK.

I really hope and pray that this is just a precautionary measure. I know what it is like to adopt a dog that love had missed one time. Give it another chance, and you have a wet tongue for the rest of your life - right on your face. I love doggy kisses. And, I love to give them back.

Sorry to hear about Jett..... If something don't change with big white dog playing Houdini, She may be needing a new home with a tall fence and electronic anti-escape measures.

Black animals are considered to be scary. Black dogs are 'mean' and black cats are 'witches'. The other theory is that they just can't be SEEN as well in the normally dim light of animal shelters. I have to give McKamey credit, their holding cells are painted a nice creamy color so that even the dark colored animals can be seen. It does NOT smell like a dog pound in there either. Of course, they are still very NEW. The shine may wear off that penny.
Last Wednesday was my first visit to McKamey. I was actually surprised by how FEW animals they have over there. No wonder it's always 'full'. They only have about 8 adult sized pens and 4 puppy pens. Sort of leaves me wondering what in the heck do they do in the other 2/3's of that gigantic building?
I need to call the Hamilton County Humane Society down town and see if the old pound is still open and adopting out pets. Both of my current dogs came from there. We got Bowser as a puppy and Jack as an adult dog. Both seemed SO pathetic, unloved, and ready to die when we found them in those small dark cages. And if you've ever been to my house, you know they are NOT that way now! My critters may be crazy, but they are lovable. (Once Jack accepts you into the 'pack'.)

Thanks for the sympathy guys.
Grid, are we talking about a baby puppy or just a bouncy young dog? I don't think I have the time to invest in a little puppy right now. It wouldn't be fair as they need a lot of attention. But if KC doesn't find it a good home, let me know. We'll consider any critter that is 'sturdy' enough to be outside. Jack rules the house! But Bowser is getting rather lonely.
*giggle* I keep laughing at poor Jack being tossed outside more than he likes to be. I keep thinking of that line from Gone with the Wind. "Who's going to milk that cow, Ms Scarlett? We're house workers." Jack keeps giving me that "Why are you putting me out, Ms Scarlett? I'm the house dog!" look.

Scarlett there is a sweet little female Basset Hound that hangs around my brother's house who needs a good home. This dog has been fixed but was abandoned and is currently being fed by the neighborhood. I could probably bring her by to let you meet her this week sometime.

Or there's the half-grown black and tan (and some white) dog at the barn that they rescued and are looking for a home for. He's already very people friendly and dog socialized. Of course, he promises to be at least Howler sized and sturdy.
There's no lack of needy dogs to choose from.

The Humane Society is still there, only cleaned up a lot - much better shape than in the old days. Also, you might check with PetSmart to see what adoption group was there on Saturday (it may have been the Humane Society) because there were three beautiful black dogs for adoption. One was long-haired, very pretty and friendly.

I'm not going to go looking for that scar, Grid. I know about where it is.... or was. ~ Free dogs off the street work for me. I'm all about rescuing critters. I'm just as happy with one directly picked up off the street as one from the shelter. The Rabies clinics are starting this weekend and I know all about Wally's Friends for spay/neuter if needed. I can get them "Up to speed" without the Humane Society.

Jack bites. He's a Crack Russel Terrorist. It's like an initiation into the family to get chomped on.

I read in the paper this morning that McKamey had a bunch of dogs with Kennel cough. That may have something to do with them being closed earlier.

i know that animal shelters around the country suspend the adoption of black cats for about a week before halloween and even after. there are some sick people out there who who are superstitious enough to sacrifice them for what ever reason.
i have a solid black cat and i would never give him away. he is such a ball of unexpected adventures around the house. hiding under the bed and attacking feet, hiding in the closet while reaching out to scratch at you as you walk by the closet, pounding off the kids as they play in the floor, chasing anything across the floor at 3am, and in the morning when its feeding time, he jumps up on the bed and sits on my back or my side (depending how i am laying) and stares at me until i get up to feed him. if he feels he stares long enough without a response, the ice cold nose to the ear with the race car purring will wake me up very fast.
if you have a cat, you know how they are. they think they are part human. truth is, animals pick the owners, not the other way around.

Once the novelty wears off this new McKamey animal center place, I hope that the community will rally around the HES and their "dog pound". Those people are working hard and doing a good job, especially since "Dr. Death" left there several years ago. I've gotten several "keepers" there.

Actually, both of my current dogs came from the Highland Park facility. I see from the website that they have really spruced that place up! Lord knows it needed a face lift. The last time I was there, it was pretty sad. I wanted to take ALL the dogs home and at least let them have room to run in the sun.
